Re: Canadian Universities reputation around the globe?
My random tips from experience:
Only idiot employers will care what school you went to. If you get interviewed by someone who is keen on you because of your school, you might want to think twice about THEIR qualifications to employ you. As soon as you get a job doing ANYTHING in your field, they won't even ask what school you went to or what your marks were. Take your MacLean's magazine and burn it. Former artsies are not qualified to rate universities. By far the most important thing is that you go to a place where you will enjoy yourself and learn. You want to reach the end with a degree in your hand and a big smile on your face. The degree gets you interviews, but the smile gets you the job you want. Very few profs suck, but every school has 2 or 3. Just hope they teach easy stuff. Montreal is a great city for enjoying yourself, but I know very little about McGill itself. There is always good stuff going on in Montreal. Waterloo/Kitchener/Cambridge reminds me of New Jersey. I will stop there, because I have probably already offended lots of people. It is probably a good place to go if you want to work for Research In Motion. Queen's is in beautiful small town Kingston. I hear a few people who aren't students live there. I've never seen another place which had street after beautiful street of ALL student houses. If I were choosing between the 3 in the same program, I would choose McGill unless my friends were going to Queen's. I would not choose Waterloo unless I was keen on getting a RIM job.(sorry, I HAD to put that in there) (just noticed that you already chose, so you don't have to burn your MacLean's - good choice)

Re: Canadian Universities reputation around the globe?
IIRC, RandomGuy is/was at Waterloo... Perhaps he can answer some questions?

Re: Canadian Universities reputation around the globe?
I disagree with the Icky's comments about Waterloo. Waterloo isn't just about RIM (Blackberry), there is a lot more depth there than that.
You could go to either school and not be disappointed, they are both world class schools. RandomGuy is definitely the person you want to talk to about Waterloo. McGill, well what can I say Montreal is a great place to spend time in. ![]() Vulcan is from Montreal IRC, maybe ask him about the city and McGill.

Re: Canadian Universities reputation around the globe?
Most important part:
If I read correctly, you are deciding between computer science at UW and computer engineering at McGill. I recommend that you first decide which course you want to study (computer science or computer engineering) because they are significantly different. If you want to study computer engineering then you should definitely take computer engineering at McGill over computer science at UWaterloo. Less important part: I agree with Icky about the MacLean's rankings. They sound like the "prospective students" brochures from the various universities (ie total BS) but you can probably rely on the numbers they give you. Some undergrads got rich by working at RIM and they are a big employer a block away from campus so you hear about that a lot, but the options extend way past that. For instance I bet the options in silicon valley would be best with a UW degree. I'll echo with icky said about getting interviews and getting jobs. I don't have much experience competing with non-UW students for jobs so I don't have much to add but since it's the title of this thread, UW does have the best reputation (actually I think you could say McGill has a better reputation overall across all faculties, not just focusing on high-tech). As for Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge I have to agree that Cambridge reminds me on New Jersey too for some odd reason. However, as a UW alumnus who now lives in Kitchener and works in Waterloo I never have any reason to spend any time there. Waterloo is nice place. you always hear about it being one of the top places to live in the country in some study or another. It is also a high-tech growth area without crazy real-estate prices or jam-packed roads. Last edited by RandomGuy; 04-10-2006 at 12:31 AM. |

Re: Canadian Universities reputation around the globe?
notes..
1) yes, i know mcgill's in quebec, my bad... 2) Montreal is a blast 3) McGill's a fantastic school. Why not ask some of the students from both places, see what you like. 4) he's very right about which program fisrt, university second 5) It doesn't matter in the end, theory's theory. 2+2 is 4, even if you went to UCLA... 6) It's university, think aobut who you are, think about where you will fit in best. 7) You've already decided, good for you, you will DEFINATLY have a blast, and make sure, definatly sure, to check out soda on new years eve. i won't say why.. ![]()

Re: Canadian Universities reputation around the globe?
The thing about RIM was just a jab at K/W, but it seems to have been taken more seriously.
![]() I've only been there a few times, but it just strikes me as a bit of a sprawl with nothing unique about it. That's why I gave it the nasty NJ comparison. You could come back and say that it is like Princeton, which is indeed a very nice part of NJ. (but that wouldn't be true... Kingston would be a much closer comparison to Princeton) ![]()

I like both software and hardware Randomguy. (I applied to both computer science and engineering at McGill). Let's say if i go to Computer engineering at Waterloo, would that be better than a degree from McGill? (I never been to Waterloo or Montreal, so if someone who has been to botoh places give me some comparison please).
*thanks to all those who replied, great help Ed |

Re: Canadian Universities reputation around the globe?
have you visited both? you should if you haven't... maybe a second visit if you have...
university is 4 of the best years of your life, so you kinda wanna be sure about where your going - school name and rep really don't matter all that much if they're about the same.... |

Ouch. Although I'm developing an immunity to those sorts of comments. I'm from Tucson and my family gives me endless crap about my choice of schools. Then they wonder why I felt the need to get a somewhat respectable distance away from them. |

Arizona is in the US of A, and I am living in the Land of the Peace.
