Re: The beer thread
Drinking Guinness out of the bottle right now, definitely different, not necessarily bad, but definitely different.

Re: The beer thread
Anyone allergic to sulfites like me? I can drink maybe only 3 or 4 oz of beer that contains sulfites without getting sick. Some beers contain more sulfites than others, so it varies a little. These days I stick with brewery/restaurants, which usually don't put sulfites in their beer.

Re: The beer thread
Red Wines also have sulfites. Here's a nice link with some info.

Re: The beer thread
Hmm well after reading that it seems like sulfites may be more prominant in Macro brews or budget beer? There are some breweries now that offer organic lagers which would further reduce the chances of it entering via the ingredients?
I just hate to see a man be denied a beer if there is a solution out there

Re: The beer thread
It seems to be very brand specific. I've never had any good experiences with Budweiser (taste aside). Sam Adams gave me trouble in the past. But I recently tried half a bottle of the Oktoberfest, with no ill effects.
After finding out about my sulfite allergy, I generally stick to liquors. They don't contain sulfites (at least not in any large amount).

Re: The beer thread
I have a bottle of one of my favorites, Rogue's Juniper Pale Ale, in my fridge just waiting tom get cold enough for me to drink it. This stuff is delicious. It tastes sort of like an IPA but you can distinctly taste the juniper berries they throw into the mixture. Its really more of a cold weather beer but I'm still going to enjoy it immensely.

Re: The beer thread
I actually found a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada's BigFoot Barleywine from 2006 at my local one stop alcohol shop. At the very top of the storage area where no one looks because it's 5 feet above my head.
So I should be pouring one just to try it out.
Since it may be a tad over where my sensibilities for beer are at this time.
Another discovery for me atleast is that there is a brewery in Blanco, Tx by the name of Real Ale Brewery. I got a six pack of their taster assortment. Will report with pics and opinion later.

Re: The beer thread
Was the Sierra Nevada's in a box or exposed to light? If it was exposed to light, even if it isn't sun light, it can destroy the beer over that period of time. I look like a looser at store when grabing individual bottles as I try to grab ones in the "shade" or at least ones that have the least exposure to light (slowly turning into a Beer snob
)

Re: The beer thread
Yeah that light is a killer.
When I get my second fridge I am taking out the bulb and putting it the corner behind some sun shade in my storage room.
The barleywine was actually in the back storage room since 2006.
But only recently was put in the main floor. I can assume it was exposed to light since the coolers are on the other side of the room from the storage shelves.
Nah not a Snob LB.
A snob is someone who thinks their beer is the beer to have no matter what.
I think you are getting close to being a beer geek. Which is pretty cool.

Re: The beer thread
It was intense.
The mouth feel was great cold and was very creamy feeling.
The alcohol level being 9.6% ABV was noticeable right from the start.
With the initial pour could have been mistaken for a root beer.
The carbonation was intense and the coffee color head was about 2 inches.
The body was medium brown with the edges being a light color similar to muddy water.
The malt was also something I can relate to.
The sweetness definitely contrasted with the bitterness from the hops.
The smokiness of say a Guinness was missing but the amount of malt was definitely up there.
The hops were quite overwhelming in my opinion. Much more than what I am used to in my beers on hand. (Guinness, Shiner Black, Shiner 99 Helles, Full Sail Pale Ale, Anchor Steam)
With my only comparable profile being about twice the hops in a Anchor Liberty Ale.
It was sweet at first taste then the hops really started kicking in.
After warming up the mouth feel was less creamy and started to thin out. The carbonation was still there after about 15 minutes but also starting to settle down.
This is when the alcohol smell really started to knock on my front door and was increasing in intensity.
This is definitely a great beer and probably will age pretty well.
But for me as a novice in the beer appreciation field.
This is definitely a beer that is above my tastes at this time.
So I cannot fully appreciate the minute details in the flavor profile.

Re: The beer thread
Nice write up Amu, sounds like a beer that you have once and a while, not a session beer.
I'm picky about hop bitterness. I don't mind it bitter but only certain bitter tastes suite me.
