Re: The beer thread
So anyone tried something new lately?
I am trying to get Shiner 100 but my distributor doesn't stock it.
Last time my distributor didn't stock it I drove to Corpus Christi for 3 cases of beer and a variety of Belgian and American Craft beer in 750mL bottles.

Re: The beer thread
I had the Shiner Holiday before the new year, it was pretty good stuff. I still have a few in the refrig.

Re: The beer thread
Had a Michelob product that kind of surprised me over the holiday -

Light, but kind of warming. Touch of vanilla - nearly unnoticable.. much less sweet than I expected (I don't like sweet).
Very drinkable to me anyway.

Re: The beer thread
Buddy of mine just put out his latest homebrew concoction:
Maple Hazelnut Brown Ale.
Now, as strange as that sounds, this is a winter beer, and they brewed it to perfection. You can actually taste the maple syrup and hazelnut that they used, and I'm not talking the way you can "taste" the hops in budweiser, which everyone knows is crap. This stuff is GOOOOD. And at a meager 13.5% alcohol by volume, you can imagine that it leads to good times too.

Re: The beer thread
The Shiner CHeer was supposedly a reinvention of their Dunkelwiezen beer.
Though some claim that it was not as good as their Dunkel. But that's what recipes are for to be tried and enjoyed.
If Spoetzl is going to be throwing a bash for their 100th I plan to attend.
But I wish they would announce something since I also want to go to the Oregon Brewers Festival in July.

Re: The beer thread
First off, nice revive, I was just thinking about this thread.
I have recently found Samuel Smith Imperial Stout....
Damn is this a fine brew. It is as black as night, litterally I held it up to a light and couldn't see a hint of light through it. It has a very strong ale smell with some rasin and chocolate. The taste is very intense but enjoyable, it tastes like it smells, tart but smooth at the same time. It's very much a stout but the finish is very pleasent with a hint of sweetness. There are allot of flavours happening in this beer and at 7% the alcohol is faintly present at all times.
It is worth a try if you can get it.
I have also tried the Rogue Hazelnut Brown Ale and enjoyed it. It seems to lack a bit of mouth feel to me but overall very pleasent. The hazelnut aroma and taste are nice without being synthetic or overdone.
I may have mentioned it in the past but Mill Street Tankhouse Ale is my current session beer. It is a Pale ale by name but more of a IPA at heart. The first time I tried it the lingering hop aftertaste was to strong for me. Now though I love it. It has a very malty introduction and nice mouth feel, it slowly transitions to the hops wich are bitter to the very end but enjoyable.
I have now started to look very seriously at starting a home brewing operation. Anyone into this? I have done some reading but would like to here how real world people do it etc.

Re: The beer thread
Thanks Amu, I have seen that AHA link in my recent searches. You Yanks always have better resources! Just trying to find some stores within an 45-60min drive is challenging.
That book looks great, I read up on some of Palmers stuff already. The receipes though would be nice to work with, especially because they are extract based. I don't think I would jump right into all grain yet.
I will take a listen to the link when I get home. Cheers.

Re: The beer thread
Anyone tried the Shiner 100 Commemorator brew? I've been keeping an eye out for it at the grocery store, but I think I'm going to have to make a trip to a liquor store to find it...

Re: The beer thread
I had a Decadent Imperial IPA the other night and it was amazing. It also contained 10% ABV and I spent the whole night talking about how I was going to grow a Tom Selleck mustache. Very good stuff. I just started brewing a batch of Oktoberfest lager with a bit of extra molasses for body and flavor. Hopefully it turns out.

Re: The beer thread
Yes, actually have tried it and I just happen to have two cases sitting right here in my room. I had to special order them from my local.
What I have been meaning to try is the Shiner Family pack. Which is supposed to have their Doppelbock but a little different.
I really like the Commemorator. It's what I have come to expect from Shiner only more so. I can drink a six pack...but I don't recommend it as it's not a lanwmower beer that's for sure.
Here is a link to Beeradvocate.com which is a great rag but their taste rating doesn't match my own on the Shiner 100.

Re: The beer thread
For whatever reason, I've been able to drink some beers without getting really sick. (Budweiser still does it to me, so I've stayed away from the macrobreweries.) Anyway, I've been trying out lots of beers lately. I've most enjoyed Sam Adams Scotch Ale, Rogue Chocolate Stout, and Ommegang Abbey Ale so far. What should I try next?
