That's crazy about the Wittekerke. It's a great beer, and all just for a promotion? Insane. We have beers like that in the U.S., but those are called "Bud Ice" and "Bud Dry".

I bought a six pack of Fat Tire the other day, and its really odd tasting stuff. Its not bad, but its not my favorite, I still like Shiner Bock better.

Yo UnDeaD...you're going to have to join me at the Flying Saucer sometime for some Shiner then! There's one particular night every week where all Texas beers are on special.

Researched a little bit as I was in a discussion with my GF as to wether it was a real town. I found this:

"WITTEKERKE is a fictitious name for a typical Flemish town, like we find hundreds of villages in Flanders with a name ending on KERKE (church) or KAPELLE (chapel). WITTE means white in English, thus the translation of the name is WHITE CHURCH. The Bavik brewery has since a long time brewed its own authentic WIT beer under the "Bavik Wit" label, but the brewery chose to change the name in cooperation with the producers of the Belgian sit-com "WITTEKERKE", airing twice a week in prime-time on the Belgian TV channels. The actors drink WITTEKERKE during the show."

Seems for a my noob choice, they still agree with the Orval choice. The prices did shock me I must say. Then again I guess it's the importing and they are perhaps fair.

One tip. DON'T BUY "STELLA ARTOIS" in the us. It is an ordinary beer in Belgium, served form the barrel, at the lowest price in the pub usually. Yet I have heard that AMBEV the owners of it (Belgian-South American company now) are marketing it as a luxury beer abroad. I think a bit like Carls-"best beer in the world"-berg I think. This is really obnoxious imo. It's the beer people would get drunk on in a bar, drinking a dozen or more etc. It is not a luxury beer at all, instead, some on the list in the NY times are infinitely more interesting, and worth importing/buying.

You can find Stella Artois for a reasonable price around here and it's just a plain good beer IMO. It's not uncommon for a standard beer in a country to be marketed as upscale in the U.S. or other countries.

Yeah. Both times I've been to Europe, the eurotrash nouveaux riche were all drinking bud bottles at the nicer bars and clubs we went to. I just wanted to smack those $5 buds out of their hands.

SO TRUE! In Switzerland we had Schlossberg - the standard drunkhouse brew - and it was still 10x better than a Bud.

Stella is also about $1.20 a bottle here in stores.. half what the cheapest on the list runs... so that pretty much puts it in it's place amongst the beers on the list.

    Re: The beer thread

just found this thread. 2 beers i buy too much: paulaner hefeweizen and dos equis... dos equis is because i got hooked on it eating too much mexican food. otherwise, give me a hearty german fill in the blank or a martini. of course, if i can find it, sam adams double bock is in there as well. well, there's an assortment of sam adams and new belgiums brews i suppose.
