Re: Good War Movies

Comming late to the thread all the good and obvious suggestions have been taken, except for one of my favorites.

Sahara

It's not realistic, it's not historically accurate. But it's a good B&W patriotic movie from the 40's. Hollywood produced a lot of them during that time. Some good , some bad, some that didn't hold their relevance over time. But Sahara is a good story with good characters. Plus I liked Bogart in a military role in this film.

Filmed during World War II, this film was intended to be a propaganda piece for the U.S. government. Seargant Joe Gunn (Bogart) leads an abandoned tank unit after the fall of Tobruk in North Africa. The tanks picks up British, French, South African, and Sudanese soldiers along the way, becoming a microcosm of the Allied troops. The group works together to defeat a much larger German force that wants the same water well that they have. The film portrays all of the images that the U.S. deemed important for the American people see in regards to the war.

Tex: "Where you from Joe"?

Bogart: "No place Tex, just the Army"

Great line.

Re: Good War Movies

Nobody mentioned Thin Red Line. I loved that movie but it seems its a love it or hate it kind of film for most.

Green Berets
Hell in the Pacific
Flying Leathernecks
The Seabees (Fighting Seabeas?)
The Eagle Has Landed
Where Eagles Dare
Bridge Over the River Kwai (one of my faves--check out Alec Guinnes in this film)
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo
Run silent Run Deep
Wake Island
Guadalcanal Diary

PS...took a completely useless but ever so fun course in college that studied the evolution of the WWII combat film as a genre ...so this thread really hits home !!

Enemy at the Gates and Memphis Belle are probably my favorites.

It's definitely one of my favorite movies. I think this picture just caught a lot of people off guard; SPR was released in the summer of '98 (the "down 'n dirty" of war) and TRL came out that winter. It combines war with National Geographic with "case studies" with "what's the meaning of life?" and succeeds on all levels. Terrence Malick is a genius...which reminds me...THE NEW WORLD comes out today on DVD, I believe...

It won Best Picture, how could you think it wouldn't be good? It is a phenomenal film!

The winning director just looked goofy. And the title seemed way to peppy for my tastes.

But you are right, it is phenomenal. Made me cry even. (I can admit that and still play here, right?)

Nobody laugh; this is how I determine which movies to watch too. Half the things that win best picture aren't so great, anyways.

Which ones aren't so great? (I think the only winner that I haven't seen is 1980. The rest I've thought were great.)

And it looks like I was wrong about it winning Best Picture. It lost to Shakespeare in Love, and Benigni lost to Spielberg for Director, too.

But, c'mon, look at that list. Look at all the great movies on it! Look at how many we've already named in this thread, that are on that list!

<shrug> Different strokes for different folks...

Ooh, and call the SAS or Delta, 'cause this thread has been hijacked!
