Re: All Time Favorite Game
I'd say Deus Ex and Interstate 76 are tied for me. I would say Half-life 1 & 2, but I think I like the universe/story more than I like the actual games.

I found the plot and characters so contrived and confusing for FF7, it really destroyed the storytelling for me. I could write a book on why FF7 can't compete with any of the older American released FFs, except on graphics.

Best atmosphere: Alien Vs Predator 2 hands down. The mappers and storyline artists put so much thought into the suspense and forboding of that game, it boggles the mind. It's single-player campaigns (besides the xenomorph's) borrowed so much from the movies, it played out just like them. Kudos.
Best Strategy implementation: X-Com UFO Defense (AKA UFO): So much to manage. So much fun.
Most hear pounding action: Unreal tournament. UT killed deathmatch for me. My buddy and I used to DM on Tom's Deck 16 non-stop working for 1st and 2nd place. It got so insane, I finally had to quit. It's also one of the reasons I don't like to compete in video games.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
In the spirit of fall cleaning and the inevitable stumbling across something that makes you stop and think of old times I will resurrect this thread. Its not too old but still has some dust.
There have certainly been a lot of memorable games since I first started playing videogames. I don't think I have a favorite of all favorites because each game worth mentioning means something a little different.
Sports Game: NHL 95 (pc)
I stared at the back of the box everytime I was dragged to the mall. I still wonder what the clerk thought of me as I would just sit there reading the back over and over again. I finally got it for my 12th birthday and I dont know how many seasons I have played since. I still have the game and actually keep my high school computer around so I can still load it up every once in awhile.
Multiplayer Sports game: NCAA Football 2000 (ps1)
Me and 5 other buddies started a dynasty one evening my junior year in high school and never looked back. Hours upon hours were spent playing and recruiting. If we played each other a whole day was set aside for that one game as it was considered the game of the week and the question on everyone's mind was always "have you played your game yet?" so we could advance to the next week. If you looked at my GPA for my Junior Year you could clearly see what took priority during those seasons. I continued to enjoy the series (actually skipped it this year when the same flaws since 2000 were still present) but nothing will ever compare to that first time playing and the guys I played with.
Multiplayer FPS: Timesplitters 2 (gamecube)
I don't think anyone beat the actual storyline to the game. We spent all of our time in multiplayer or trying to complete the challenges. It was just good all around fun. Whether playing in between classes or while drinking before/after the bars or just because we had nothing better to do.
Online: Battlefield 2 (pc)
My first real online game. It has almost everything you need in a military setting and of course once I found tacticalgamer.com the experience is over the top. From the forums to the final round of a scrim I have experienced every sort of emotion, except love, while playing BF2 and its mods.
Strategy:
I dont have a favorite strategy game. There have been too many that have done it right. Age of Empires 2 was easy to pick up. Empire Earth was the first for me to use sea, air and land units together. Rise of Nations was similar to Empire Earth but had better units and was more polished. The Total War series brought epic battles and strategic level play together. Dawn of War/Company of Heroes are just all out fights and I would consider them the Hollywoods of strategy games, just great visuals and intense action.
Action/FPS: Crusader:No Regret (pc)
This might be my favorite all-time but there is no way I could leave these other games out for the reasons I have mentioned. No Regret had everything in it including 16 different weapons, and handful of different explosives for your liberal use. The story was well written and was tied together by live action cut scenes. The graphics were amazing and the isometric view was done amazingly well. You were simply a badass red armored mercenary known as Silencer with a full arsenal at your fingertips. I would actually have to stop before entering a room to plan how I would dispose of my foes. Would I leave nothing but skeletons using the "Broiler" or would I use the "Crystalizer" to create my own frozen statues with the option of shattering them like glass afterwards. Just a ton of different options for a 12 year old boy. I still love this game and like NHL 95 I still hop on every now and then to play it. The visuals and sounds still hold water today and if you set your system calender to 12/25 you get an amped version of a couple of christmas carols instead of the normal soundtrack. It has everything a computer game needs; visuals, sounds, lots of options (weapons), intuitive gameplay and a solid story.
Honorable Mention: Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay (XBOX, pc)
I just thought I would mention this game. It might be the only game where I have beaten the game and immediately restarted to simply play again. Great visuals, great acting (Vin Diesel is perfect), exceptional story and almost flawless execution. If you find yourself at a store and its sitting there I would definitely recommend picking it up especially since its just $20. I actually owned the xbox version and after I sold my xbox system I picked up the pc version. It is a little short but the gameplay is superb and the story is well written.

I have to go with an old Microprose PC game called Lightspeed. Playing that on a 286 was a very impressive experience when I was a young kid.

I'm with Rick - Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is my favorite game of all-time. Goldeneye is an honorable mention.
Funny how all of our all-time favorite games are old.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
Sports Game: Baseball Stars (Nintendo)
I can only say that this was my all-time-favorite sports game because of the fun my brother and I had with it "back in the day".....we'd play seasons and I loved the ability to earn money based upon your winning (or losing) team, and you created players or bought/traded rookies with it's "stats" system. I dunno, it just brings back many good memories for me.....
FPS (SinglePlayer): Thief (PC)
I just liked the "sneaky" aspect of this game...
FPS (MultiPlayer): Joint Ops (PC)
Despite it's bugs, I enjoyed the introducing of the "support" roles and the point system for them (which was done before BF2 came out). I am an older gamer (compared to many I play with, 36 is old).....and I don't have the reflexes to be close in shotty master, or sniper-elite from long range, and I never could get the hang of the pilot controls in BF
C, BF:V or other games....but Joint Ops' simpler heli controls allowed me to shuttle players into battle behind enemy lines and get bonus points for their kills......I like being a "tank whore" as some call it (but hell, it's because I know my limits as a "1337" gamer compared to others with hella-fast reflexes.....)....and the joint ops game promoted much greater teamplay than BF
C or BF:V. Despite JO's shortcomings, it was a much more gratifying game to me.....
Online: Neverwinter Nights (PC)
My first real online MMOG. While it's not a FPS game, I enjoyed the "community feel" of it and took me back to my D&D days of the early to mid 80s......
Console Party Game: Fuzion Frenzy (XBox)
Whether drunk, sober, young, old, gamer, non-gamer, this game is a game ANYONE can pick up and play at a party. Just love it and still do!
Strategy: Axis and Allies (Board Game)
Too many late nights in college playing this game......and if I could find some friends to play this again, I would take it back up in a heart beat......a few beers, snacks, pizza, and a big table......oh yeah!
*sigh*....if only I could find a "new" game which will become that fun "classic" I'll always remember.....maybe it's time for me to break down and reinstall BF2 and check out some of these MODs for it.....(without hijacking the thread, if someone could point me to some links for these mods so I can get aquainted with what's out there, I'd greatly appreciate it. I miss the "teamwork" fun-factor I had in Joint Ops.....)

Re: All Time Favorite Game
For me it was Privateer.
I remember that game giving me the childhood christmas feeling(which is a good thing for me...). I love the Sci-Fi genre(which hasen't produced much good stuff in the last few years) and that game did it for me.Last edited by PanzerHans; 11-24-2006 at 01:55 PM.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
I grew up playing video games when the arcades actually had the newest and best games available because the computing power available at home paled in comparison. Intellivsion, Atari 2600 & 5200, Nintendo...
A buddy got an Atari 800 computer which we played untold numbers of games for hours on end.
Then after a hiatus I finally got my own PC right after my roommate brought home StarCraft. I loved that game! That is where I discovered online gaming and all of its ups and downs. From there I started playing UT and then a mod called Tactical Ops, which I believe was the UT equivalent to Counter-Strike. Again, it had to be online or I wasn't interested.
After another hiatus (first baby) I built a new rig and discovered BF2 and Tactical Gamer...I don't think it can get better than this.|TG|MeleeClear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose!

Re: All Time Favorite Game
Phantasy Star, the version released on the original 8-bit Sega Master System. I've seen more than one review of Phantasy Star Online mention "the original game on the Genesis" which sucks for those of us who remember the original game, but it's actually what got me into RPGs.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
I can't pick a favorite, as my list changes with interest level, hindsight... whim.
So I'm going to go with a bit more objective approach; what fundamentally established my reference point for gaming in all the years and titles before and since... Ghost Recon, followed closely by Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear.
The latter immersed and challenged me in tactical gaming like no other game previously, and the former upped both counts. These are my benchmarks for tactical shooters. There are other choices out now with more advanced realism (environmental, that is), and therefore even more immersive. But the overall gameplay hasn't surpassed these two giants. Many newer games have certainly advanced *elements* of gameplay (BF2's outstanding squad/command system, the most notable contribution since GR/R6 IMO), but none has stepped up to become as overwhelmingly revolutionary as these 2 were back in their day.
Nowadays, I'm (not surprisingly, if you know me) all about racing sims, GT Legends in particular. I've grown very tired of shooters (more of the same, the same, the same), and racing has filled that space in surprising ways; mostly due to the unmatched realism and immersion I get. It's far more immersive than even the best shooters I've found. I think that's got more to do with my lack of real experience in tactical training or even combat, but plenty of experience behind an actual steering wheel (even if not actually racing).
