Re: All Time Favorite Game
Elite and Frontier - at least ten years of my gaming life (1985-1995+) went on those two.
Honourable mentions for UFO: Enemy Unknown, TIE Fighter, Falcon 4, Dune 2, and Syndicate. It's kind of discouraging to notice that the most recent one is eight years old. Come on developers, rock me!Last edited by Maus; 11-26-2006 at 10:53 AM.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
Argh... there are so many, and picking a favorite is so hard.
For RTS's, I'd have to say Starcraft and Rome: Total War. The former because of it's universe and story and art style, and the latter because a year and a half ago I got a horrible poison-oak type rash all over my body, and R:TW was able to engage my mind so deeply that I wouldn't feel the rash. So I'd play it for like 12-20 hours until my tiredness could overwhelm my itchiness. Darwinia gets an honorable mention as the best looking game I've ever seen.
For FPS's, I loved Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock 2, Chronicles of Riddick, HL2, Max Payne 2, and Halo. The first three are just original classics, Riddick was a totally out of left field nigh flawless game, HL2 uses the environment so well to tell a story, Max Payne 2 is incredibly fun and has an incredible story, and Halo was Halo.
For action/adventure games, I loved American McGee's Alice, Mafia, and Gish. Alice had an amazing art style, Mafia had amazing cinematic flare, and Gish is just amazingly fun.
For RPG's, Gothic 2 and Planescape: Torment. The former I still prefer to Oblivion just because it handles the concept of improvement so well, and manages to be difficult, yet free-roaming, and it has a massive world. The latter has an extremely interesting universe and a well-told story.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
Fallout!!
And also, back when the internet was just a little known thing there were these other little known things that one could dial into called BBS's. I remember one that hosted this game called Operation Overkill. ASCII graphical map and mostly text based play but it was some of the funnest primitive online gaming I had ever experienced. In fact, I probably owe my love for online multiplayer gaming entirely to this game.
Wow...I'm old...

Re: All Time Favorite Game
Aw, crap. Might have to extent honourable mentions to Thief II and Torment. I guess those'd at least be this century, right?
Thief:TDP was too undeady, and Thief 3 was a different game, though still good. Thief II got everything right. I can't add SS2 though, because of how disappointing it is when it gets crappy at the end.
---
I was never able to finish Torment (I got stuck and had overwritten my last "safe" save) -- anyone know where I can get it without breaking the bank? I remember seeing it as a double pack with some other game for maybe $5-$10 a couple of years back -- is that still available?2142: |TG-Irr| Silverfish

Re: All Time Favorite Game
Deus Ex is my favourite. It seems to suck me in every time I play it.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
I got PS:T as part of a double pack with Soulbringer. Here's the link:

Anyway, SS2 gets a mention from me because of how it presents the story (different views garnered from logs, ghosts, and emails, and then piecing together the individual perspectives to determine what really happened), as well as the overall story, and the superbly tense beginning of the game.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
FPS: Probably Battlefield 2
RTS: Rome: Total War
RPG: Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall - the series has gone downhill ever since
And I also loved Knights of the Old Republic, some epic storytelling there.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
RPGness: Baldur's Gate II. Finally an RPG company that consistantly put out quality games that didn't come out of japan.
FPSness: The old doom series. I played that soooo much back in the day, I still remember exactly how to unlock the secret wolfenstein missions, and the fact that the first jump is a *****
All-Time: Independence War II. It's the only game that I will go back and play again on a yearly basis. Best game in a niche genre that I love to death and wish there was more of.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
For me it's Descent.
I've never been immersed in a game like I was with that one. Your little spacecraft litterally became an extension of you and you could basically think your way around the levels... the dogfighting was just incredible since you had 6 degrees of freedom - you could "strafe" left, right, up, down, forward, and back, and then 'aim' using the joystick.... god i miss that game.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
I've been wanting to reply to this thread but I don't find it easy picking my all-time favorite game. Descent was definitely near the top of the list though! My first almost-reply to this thread named that very same game.
Duke Nuke'em 3D is also pretty high up there on that list.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
A tough choice. Yeah, Duke's right up there for me. I'd have to say Wizardy as my all time favorite. So many good memories playing. I still have the original box (among many, like Ultima) at my folks house.

Re: All Time Favorite Game
I used to play Wizardry all the time on my Apple //e. I had an 80 column card so I remember something funky about there being spaces in between every character on the screen when running in 80 column mode.
Wizardry was an awesome game though! I spent more time than I care to remember in that damn Overlord's Proving Grounds.
