    Rosetta@home

I'm aware TG already has a SETI team, but if searching for E.T. isn't your cup of tea, there are other uses for your PC when you're not sitting in front of the darn thing (or "backing up" DVDs from the library in case their copies get lost, you thoughtful guy!!).

Here is an article in Wired that talks about Rosetta@home, which basically turns your "idle" computer into a workstation for performing protein research. The ultimate goal is to use knowledge gained from the research to fight such diseases as cancer, Alzheimers, AIDS, etc.

Here is a link to the project itself.

The requirements for PC are 500 Mhz processor and 512 mb RAM, which is too bad because I have a couple of unused systems that barely fall beneath those specs.

Indeed. You can find other projects at the BOINC site: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

But finding ET would be the coolest!

And ET just might have the cure for those things already! Maybe ET is the cure!

Whoops, I got this project mixed up with Folding@home when I told Augustus Gloop that it ran on the same program as SETI@home.

Havent you ever seen the twilight zone episode "How to serve man"? Aliens come to earth and provide us with huge crops, cure to disease, etc etc. Basically, they solve all of mankind's problems. Then one dude finds their manual, titled "How to serve man" and translates it. Turns out, its a cookbook. Wouldnt want to eat spoiled meat, would you?
