    Black Hat 2006 - DEFCON 14

Next week I head out to Las Vegas for both Black Hat 2006 and DEFCON 14. I remember some talk last year that some other TG'ers may have attended one or both of these events. I'm going to be staying at Caesars during the Black Hat Briefings and then moving over to the Hard Rock for DEFCON and a couple days of R&R at the end. We thought about staying at the Riviera for DEFCON, but ended up getting a great deal at the Hard Rock. Not to mention that HR has that whole Rehab thing on Sundays by the pool. Nothing quite like getting shooters delivered in big syringes.

Is anyone else going this year?

Well, I'm headed out in a couple hours! I'll be checking in every now and then, but will be largely MIA until next Tuesday!

Have a safe trip. Post an AAR when you get back please. I have always wanted to go to one of these things.

That looks like so much fun! Reading the definition of a hacker page was like reading my own autobiography .

    Re: Black Hat 2006 - DEFCON 14

The conference has been quite good so far. There have been some interesting things going on in the world of AJAX and RSS feeds and some relatively interesting ways of infecting large masses of people via RSS/ATOM without their knowledge. The ante has been stepped up in many regards when it comes to compromising end user workstations.

A bit of time was spent addressing those users that think they don't need antivirus or firewalls and are too smart to get nailed by some of these various exploits and how naive that really is. At the same time, many of these exploits won't be picked up by AV/FW applications anyway.

There was a really good session on hacking World of Warcraft. The session was really about advanced rootkit development, but the presenter has done a lot of work with WoW specfically and has written exploits that get around The Warden using various methods of offloading parts of the exploit to slave servers, memory and application cloaking, and venturing into machine space (Ring 0) that developers like Blizzard most likely won't venture into in order to detect these exploits and cheats.

I have two more sessions to attend today for Black Hat and then have the night off. DEFCON starts tomorrow.

On another note; Late last night I had the opportunity to play with one of the Kiosks in the hotel/casino we're staying in and managed to get through the UI and interact with the OS sitting behind it (Windows, of course). I was able to get pretty deep into the network with only a few minutes once I breached the UI. I would love to play with that a little more tonight, but in all honesty; futzing with this type of stuff on the Casino floor seems a bit dangerous. I might poke around a little more and see how far into the network I can get, but it's difficult to navigate when the only interface available into the system is a touch-screen display.

As I'm already late for my next session, I must be off. I'll try and get on and report a little more this evening.

Not under Windows 2000. It runs under XP fine on my other laptop. But I managed to pick up a new copy of the Auditor LiveCD which had everything I needed on it, so I did eventually get the thing working. I also have a Prism2 card with me that works under Windows 2000 but I get much better results using the Orinoco card with proper drivers.

Try one of these two.. You disappeared from IRC before I finished uploading.

I think the first is an earlier version of the second.. The first includes a client manager that works with Gold and Silver cards..

Excellent. I'll try and get them downloaded for DEFCON. The wireless access in the conference rooms died when I tried swapping out the cards, so I never was able to get back on until I got up to my hotel room.

    Ugh...

    Don't try to frighten us...

Seriously, I've always thought that my greatest defense against an actual hacker is my anonymity and lack of valuable information. The firewall and AV software that I run is just to keep out the "script kiddies" and to prevent DDOS/distributed payload nasties from infecting my PC. Are you saying that there are more precautions that I should be taking? Should I be worried?
