Re: I need a job!

What Color is your Parachute? is another good one for general job searching advice. My guy at the employment office told me about it and I got some pretty good tips.
I'm not exactly the posterboy for networking and cold calling -- I've gotten two jobs from recruiters calling me after finding my resume on monster.com, and was recently rehired at one of them.. But, as I was doing the networking thing through the alumni association at my university, I ran in to a 5th cousin that I hadn't seen in 15 - 20 years or something. So, it did pay off in some small manner
And, "yea that" about the call backs. "I'll call your office on the 14th" instead of "Please call me to schedule an interview." Don't drop off the application at the parts store and hope to hear back -- call em a few days later!Battlefield Admin(BF2 Rules) (BF2142 Rules)

Most individual girls hardly break $1000/month from a website. You either do it because you like it, or as a promotional supplement to a stripping or pornography career.

Re: I need a job!
Well boys, I got lucky. I actually found a job 30 minutes out of town at a Wal-Mart out of state. Taxes are lower down there, so gas will be cheaper, and I'll be making 7+ an hour starting out. I've been looking into Wal-Mart's bonuses and etc, and there's a lot of money to be made. After two years, with enough experience and good behavior, you have the opprotunity to become a dept. manager, but like I said, it comes with good work ethics.
If anyone is looking for good opprotunities, I'd have to reccomend Wal-Mart for a definate shot. You may start small, but there is a LOT of room for advancement within. Lots of insurance coverages, health and dental, etc, and lots of bonuses and raises.
My mom worked at Wal-Mart for 5 years. She worked with a nice older lady named Dorris. After 20 years, Dorris retired with over a million dollars in stocks. She retired a RICH woman.
I'm excited myself.
Thanks for the insight everyone.

Re: I need a job!
Not to burst your bubble, but advancement in WalMart is the same as it is anywhere else. And the hot WalMart stock options are a thing of the past. I don't see the stock options as being as much of a benefit for you as they are for the company, anymore. Every company touts their career opportunities. If you aspire to nothing more than a few decades of working retail, you could definitely do worse than WalMart. You could also do much, much better.
That said, WalMart treated me fair. I worked there before the huge class action overtime lawsuit, and I'm not sure what became of that. Sure, they got some time out of me off the clock, but I made sure I wasn't treated unfairly. You would be wise to do the same.Become a supporting member!

Re: I need a job!
The biggest thing is if you are happy. Don't work at a place you aren't happy at. That's the bottom line. Sure, there is ALWAYS better... but realistically if you are happy with what you are doing then you're fine. If you hate it worse than anything, find a new job.
Yes, monster.com is very much for those with degrees and higher educations.
Try careerbuilder.com... my last 2 jobs came from there.

Re: I need a job!
That's where I do most of my shopping. Rather than monster.com, it has a lot more localized jobs. Problem is, like I said before, I might as well be in BF, Egypt. No one posts on there if they are hiring, and regardless of it's localization, they still look for experienced workers.
I'm kind've excited about Wal-Mart though, and if that doesn't work out, then I'm hoping for Auto-Zone here in town. Don't know much about cars, and it can definately be a damn good business.
My biggest thing about Wal-Mart is insurance. I'm 19. Most 19 year olds aren't employed by a company that gives them health insurance and bonuses. I also get discounts in the stores, so all of my shopping will be cheaper, and along with that it's out of state, where taxes are cheaper. Which means I'll be bringing in more down there than I would up here.
An old, but wise, teacher I had once told me his life's story. His name was Mr. Murphey. He was a principle in Mississippi for 12 years, he retired and moved up here to become a teacher for 9, retired again and moved back down there to teach at the same school for another 5 years and eventually retired from there. When I graduated high school, he was coming back to be our school's assistant principle. That man was bringing in 3 pensions, and working on his fourth. Tell me that's not brains.
If you live on the border, you can do that. I have that advantage, but I'm not entirely too sure I want to teach. I'd love to, but I don't have the money to go to college for it.
There's a lot of money to be made in education, but I think that I couldn't deal with the kids.

Re: I need a job!
More money than a Walmart cashier lol. Seriously Mom, Chewy's right. Do what makes you happy and not just what comes along. I know that's hard to swallow when your desperate for $$. You're young and will get something to give you experience eventually, just don't waste your youth on bad experience. There's a ton of programs out there to help you finance your Education. It's not for everyone, but its the best chance you have to earn more money later. Find whatever is your passion and move on it. Don't waste time. Don't be that guy that wakes up one day at 35 only to realize he's stuck in a dead end job that he hates and no where to go and has to keep doing what he's doing to support himself or worse his family. Keep working at things that will get you closer to your dream job even if Walmart is the answer to paying the bills right now. Most places will except cheap labor, try interning with a job you really want part time while keeping your gig with Walmart. Intern for free and tell them that you're checking out the job to see if it fits you. You'll learn about whether it's the right field for you and get the big "E" for experience at the same time. Good luck bro!

Re: I need a job!
Cingular beat me to the punch.... there is not a lot of money in this profession. I have talked to countless teachers over the years (even some college profs a while back) and know a few people personally who teach. Not one of them would agree with that statement. The only ones that will have somewhat of a decent retirement are the ones who have taught for 30 years at the same school.

Re: I need a job!
Congratz on you Walmart Job!
Just one comment never ever think education is to expensive! Education is the best investment you can make even if it cost you the shirt on your back. People can take away everything you have but your education is yours. Your 19, explore life a little then either learn a trade or go to school.
I also hope you know that there are grants and loans to help people go study. You also get tax breaks for tuition costs. If immigrants with no money can become doctors/engineers so can you.
Just find something you like to do.
BTW, teacher is not a bad profession you will do something good for society while making enough money and if you can put up with high school kids you can make decent money. You also get summers off to do other things.
Remember at 19 your life has just started
Good luck!|TG-Irr| Red

Dang, if I were learning a trade, I'd want to go the same way as Norm Abram, the guy on New Yankee Workshop. I'd love to be able to work with wood all day. That wood be sweet.
Congrats on the job, YerMom! Any work is better than no work and I'm proud that you took it upon yourself to look for a job.~~ Veritas simplex oratio est ~~
