Re: ps2,gc,xbox > pc ?!?
I've been using computers a long long time, but I'm In school for Network Admin/Support, and I wont be the first to say that computers can be much more complicated than meets the eye.
There's much more expandability with PCs, but mainly, I think theres just one problem. Game Developers are looking for a cheap, easy way to make a game. That means the standardized equipment will show clear lines of the hardware limits. Any time you plan to create a multi-platform game, one end gets the shaft. One company I used to respect, but now do a bit less due to this, Eidos. It started with Deus Ex: Invisible War... I loved Deus Ex. It was like one of my favorite games. But Invisible War... Good game, but It was easy to tell, the game diddn't feel native to PCs. My computer's Hardware is a great deal better than an X-Box's but I still had to make a bunch of changes just so my computer could run the game. Since then I've also Bought Theif 3, also made by Eidos, and I get the same exact feeling... It's a feeling that I payed $40+ for a watered down version of a game. And unfortunately, I dont think that'l go away... It'l slowly get worse.

Besides, I've noticed a much larger discrepancy in the amount of crappy console games than PC games. If they ever ported Britany's Dance Beat over to PC: I've (thankfully) never seen it. Quote:
Consoles also suffer from being behind the times. Hell, Halo was one of the greated Console games of all time, and it was originally designed for PC and I have pictures of an early build on the back of my VooDoo 5 box (three Master Chiefs getting into a warthog). It was old as dust before it even came out. It's always easier for console programmers because they are already working with dated equipment and have no need to "push the envelope." I'll bet money you don't see programmers wasting time trying to code Doom3 or HL2 for console. Even if they port it, they'd both look like crap. Quote:
Let's get back to the original topic: Console games > PC games? FPS: No console could ever hope to match the basic keyboard and mouse. I've played two good FPSs on Console. Goldeneye 64 for N64 and Halo for X-Box. Both would have been 100 times better on PC. Anyone who has played UT for PC, then played the absolutely craptactular PS2 port would know how bad it can get. Strategy, Simulation: Try precision selection of units with a joystick while the rest of us Zerg rush you. Sports, fighting, Racing: Advantage consoles only because these games are by nature "popcorn" games and inherently multiplayer with no worries about split screens. Graphics: Duh. By the time they had ported UT over to PS2, the PC version had been out for years and the graphics still looked like garbage on PS2. Yet I could run 1024x768 on my PII 400 Mhz and VooDoo5 (YES!).

Even though I detest consoles, they do have their place in the gaming world. Each platform will cater to a certain audience as each game targets certain types of gamers. Just like you or I would not want to play Britney's Dance Beat, some will not want to play a PC game. |
