Rice cooker/steamer?
Anyone have one that they like or hate? My wife wants one for under $50 and I'm seeing a HUGE variety of prices for what appear to be similar products.

Re: Rice cooker/steamer?
Quality over price... Thats my motto, I bought a cheap blender and a cheap dryer (To make homemade beef jerky), and I ended up spending the extra cash a few weeks later to get a better quality brand.
(But no one knows that I cook, shhh) P.S. The blender wasnt for the beef jerky, it was for the, uhh, smoothies... ya

Re: Rice cooker/steamer?
I have a rice cooker and live by it. Add rice and water, push button, perfect rice every time, totally a hassle-saver. I'm not at home right now, so I can't tell you exactly what I have, but its not an uber model. I think the only thing your getting upwards of 50$ would be stupid gimmicks you don't need. But buy whatever you feel the need for I guess.

Re: Rice cooker/steamer?
Try adding a bit olive oil into the cooker and you get crispy rice!

Re: Rice cooker/steamer?
Oooo... Zojirushi! My family had one and it lasted for nearly 10 years!
I can tell you that Asian people demand a lot from their rice cookers, so if you happen to pick up an Asian brand, especially the more expensive ones, you may want to look into learning how to use all of its dozens of functions. I have a recipe for bread baked in a rice cooker if you're interested! ![]() The old Zojirushi I had a 12? cup capacity, though I don't think we ever actually made that much rice. How many people are you cooking for?

Re: Rice cooker/steamer?
Well, my wife sometimes caters for the women at her scrapbook shop, so, occasionally she'd be cooking for 30ish women...

Re: Rice cooker/steamer?
I'd have to agree with RocketPunch that you'll be pretty hard pressed to find a good rice cooker with the capacity you're looking for at $50. The one's my family looks at with a 8-10 cup capacity from brands like Zojirushi and Sunpentown ring in at the $90-$100 area.
If you really need to stick to the budget, you may have to consider cooking the rice in shifts. Aside from the capacity, trying to cook that much rice at once is tricky, as you run the higher chance of burning the rice on the bottom before the rice in the middle cooks. It doesn't take that long (20 minutes) to get through one cook cycle, so it's not too big of a hassle.

Re: Rice cooker/steamer?
Well, Sunpentown is a Taiwanese? brand, so it's just more familiar to me than American or other Western brands of products.
Now that I think about it, I think I have an 8-cup Sunpentown at home. I don't know how your evaluation criteria would be, but I can say that's it's never burned rice and I've used it nearly daily for the last 3-4 years. It's easy to use in all you have to do is put the rice and proportionate amount of water in it (the pot part has hash marks to help you get the right amount of water for the amount of rice) and press one button. It has an auto-detector that switches from cooking to heating, which is a pretty standard feature. I suppose for your rice cookin' needs, then you may want to look at www.americastestkitchen.com. It has a rice cooker review from last year, but you need to sign up to read it. It's free and has a bunch of recipes and ingredient/equipment reviews, so if you and/or your wife would be interested in some additional culinary info, it couldn't hurt.
