November 8, 2006 - It started in 1958 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York where a nuclear scientist with too much time on his hands created a crude system he called Tennis for Two and it grew into a business with annual revenues of $10 billion. On Wednesday, November 15th, CNBC explores the fascinating history of video games and goes behind the scenes of the industry's most successful companies in "Game On! The Unauthorized History of Video Games," an original two-hour CNBC primetime documentary.
The program, hosted by CNBC anchor Bill Griffeth, airs on CNBC on Wednesday, November 15th at 9 PM and 12 AM ET, just two days before the scheduled release of Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3. CNBC will rebroadcast "Game On!" on Sunday, November 19th at 9PM and 12AM ET.
"Game On!" features exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in the history of the video game business, takes viewers inside the computer labs and inside the boardrooms of the world's most powerful companies to examine how the latest and most popular video games are created. "Game On!" shows the cutting edge technology and remarkable talent that goes into developing the graphics and sound effects that transport players into fantastic worlds of fantasy.
The program also includes riveting stories about the corporate power struggles that won (and lost) billions and how a single blunder helped destroy Atari's $2 billion-a-year-empire.
"Game On!" is the third original two-hour CNBC documentary aired within four weeks. On Oct. 18th, CNBC presented "Inside American Airlines: A Week in the Life" and on Nov. 1st, CNBC aired "Big Brother, Big Business."
Thanks, that sound interesting. I lived through those years and remember the "Pong" game.
My first computer game was a text game called "The Cave Adventure" or "The Cave" or "Adventure" anyway it was a text based game that was written in Fortran and ran on the big mainframes, there weren't any PC's yet. The graphics were awesome because the author wrote some vivid descriptions and the graphics were in your mind which is more intense than visual.
