This is going to be good.. It is all done on sound stages with blue/green screens. I read an article where the director was talking about how nice it is to work with CG blood, you can make it splatter just like you think it should.

If you are in the N Dallas area, you should come see the Keith's Comics showing. It is shown at the studio movie grill, and most of the people that go are die hard fans so you don't get all the talking and cell phones like other theaters. I have been going to Keith's movie showings for about 2 years now.

God DANGIT! I have my days and nights mixed up so I have to call around and see if any of the shows are real late/early in the evening. I missed going to see it during the opening.

Good flick. I admit it was tough at times being someone who majored in History with a concentration in Ancient History, mainly Helenic, but I enjoyed myself. Just go see it.

I saw it opening day and really enjoyed it. Pretty much what I expected. The sets, even though they were digital, were really beautifully done and I never once found myself saying "this is digital...".

    Great action, directing, and score.

I wanna see it so bad. Just too consumed with school and work. I'll see it Thursday or Friday, though. What's hilarious is how pissed off Iranians are getting about it. Even though the story is fictional, and Frank Miller has never said it's real, Iranians around the world are taking personal offense to how nasty the Persians are portrayed. Hehe...noobs.

    Re: 300

After seeing the movie four times (I work security at a theater mall here in Milwaukee) it was just mind numbing... I liked it but hated it to... sounds strange, but it's true.

Yeah, it is quite exaggerated (forget the elephants for a minute) in a lot of areas, including troop numbers (some say millions)... but even if they (300 guys) killed 100,000+ men (which at least most sources would agree with), that is a ridiculous amount of kills per guy (more than 330 per guy). That's what intrigues me... what they did with what they had. And the fact that they were going to die for a cause they believed in no matter what.

But I could have done without seeing 4 or 5 heads decapitated each time I saw the thing... not to mention the endless gallons of blood you saw fly through the air, yet somehow never found a way to hit the ground. But overall... I would probably recommend it... to some people.

“The film depicts Iranians as demons, without culture, feeling or humanity, who think of nothing except attacking other nations and killing people,” Ayende-No said in its article Tuesday.

“It is a new effort to slander the Iranian people and civilization before world public opinion at a time of increasing American threats against Iran,” it said.
Wouldn't we feel the same if a movie was released in Tehran with some equally unrealistic plot where Americans were the million men and devils (actually I'd just laugh, not really be offended, maybe westerns are use to ridicule)? Their belief is that there is cultural warfare going on, kind of like those movies during the cold war where the Russians were always the bad guys (and in kid cartoons).

This particular movie could just be a coincidence being released now, at high levels of anxiety with Iran. Although it would have to be proven there is a high level propaganda campaign against Iran going on from the White House (words of encouragement from VIPs, funneling of money etc...).

This particular movie was based on a series of Dark Horse comics that were released in 1998. A little early to be considered propoganda for this war. The same people who bought the rights to Sin City at a comicon also picked this up. It's a growing trend with movie makers to buy up these obscure graphic novels and turn them into big Hollywood productions.

Also, I don't think it was meant to be any kind of historic representation of what actually happened in the Battle of Thermopylae...but it certainly is an awesome fantasy inspired by history. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though I think someone should do a historical movie of the real battle. There's a great story behind that too and I think it would translate real well to the silver screen.

Me too... but Hollywood only wants to spend their time on something that will be a HUGE hit, not just historically accurate.

While the 1962 Movie "300 Spartans" wasn't 100% accurate, it came pretty close (to my knowledge).

Here's a link to that movie (which was the inspiration for Frank Miller)...

It had it's ups and downs. It would have been more interesting if they had left off some of the really bizarre fantasy stuff (goatboy, anyone?), and just focused on the plot, but that's all Frank Miller, and you can't make a movie based on his work without including his signature weirdness. Still, it was distracting. And some of the plot points were very Hollywood standard and predictable. Overall I give it 3 and a half meh.
