Federal law allows recording of phone calls and other electronic communications with the consent of at least one party to the call. A majority of the states and territories have adopted wiretapping statutes based on the federal law, although most also have extended the law to cover in-person conversations. Thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia permit individuals to record conversations to which they are a party without informing the other parties that they are doing so. These laws are referred to as "one-party consent" statutes, and as long as you are a party to the conversation, it is legal for you to record it. (Nevada also has a one-party consent statute, but the state Supreme Court has interpreted it as an all-party rule.)

Twelve states require, under most circumstances, the consent of all parties to a conversation. Those jurisdictions are California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington. Be aware that you will sometimes hear these referred to inaccurately as "two-party consent" laws. If there are more than two people involved in the conversation, all must consent to the taping.

Regardless of the state, it is almost always illegal to record a conversation to which you are not a party, do not have consent to tape, and could not naturally overhear.
Guess it depends on whether or not you're in one of those 12 states...

Technically, if it did go to court, Verizon would have to turn over IT'S quality control recording during the discovery phase (if it had one), right?

Well thats great but verizon gave him a full refund for his bill after hundreds of thousands of people collectively laughed at their reps.

So I guess it won't go to court.

Unbelievable. Just goes to show how much at the mercy you are of damn customer service reps.

OMG, still listening, the second female rep is even dumber than the first.

From the comments on one of the pages:

He should have just told them to Google ".002 cents per KB times 35893 KB"

That's sad when a computer is better at figuring out a word problem than your employees.

Not all companies have CS like this, infact most are very good at giving it's customers anything within reason to make them happy.

Right but the issue isn't obstinate tech support, it's people who can't do middle school level math.

Well, to be fair with the second lady, he never did actually say "I was billed $71.60, and yet according to both our calculations, according to what I was quoted, I should be charged $00.7160. I would appreciate if this could be rectified, because I have basically been billed 100 times what I was told I'd be billed.

IMO, this really isn't a math problem, as much as it seems to be. It's more of a translation/logic issue.

When you're dealing with currency and end up with 73.27, according to our standards of currency notation, that reads as $73.27. It's an easy mistake for people to make, I think, but it doesn't excuse the ignorance of some of the CS reps at Verizon.

I'm just waiting for some type of class action suit against VZW for deceptive advertising / overbilling. Time to sell your VZ stock!

    Re: Mind blowing stupidity

He really could have been a lot clearer. A lot of the time I was just willing him to say that he had been billed $73.27 instead of the $0.7324=7 he was supposed to be charged.

It took me a while to figure out what he was actually asking.

Not saying the customers reps weren't stupid though.

    Re: Mind blowing stupidity

The customer service guys probably spent more of Verizon's money by being on the phone (the cost of their wages), than if they had just refunded the guy whatever amount in the beginning. Gotta hand it to the customer for keeping his cool. I would've lost it by then.
