I want to add that neither I nor Tacticalgamer.com or it's officers are not responsible if someone tries to copy this work and it does something bad. It may very well destroy your computer, set fire to your house, make your cats run away and cause your neighbors to have BO. So don't say I didn't warn you

This device is powered via USB so it needs to be plugged into a POWERED USB hub. The current it pulls is right on the line for what is normally acceptable from a single device on a USB port.

Man, this project is such a cool thing that I can't stop thinking about it. I have all kinds of ideas for user interfaces. The power supply is good, but I can't stop thinking that a real rack mounting military device from a surplus store would be the ultimate.

And yes, wimpinator, I noticed you connecting over and over again in TS.

As long as the LCD has a standard HD4470 interface it can be inside just about anything.

Something like this would be VERY cool: http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thu...tary_radio.jpg

I chose a red LCD because it gives it the military "feel". I will be the first to admit that this project is not incredibly useful but I really enjoy building these types of things. Simply remapping some keys would have been the easiest solution. I work in electronics as a career and I don't get to play with fun stuff at work

So cool! You might want to get a few dents and maybe a bullet hole on your case; just for effect

Tonight was pretty productive. I sanded and painted the chassis. I used Krylon camouflage in green. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. I also found a knob for the contrast control. I need to pick up some rubber bumpons for feet as well as finding some cool looking screw for the LCD. Finally I will need to figure out how to label the switches. I really want the labels to be white.

    Fantastic and inspiring work, Wimpinator!

BTW, I found this thread via one of my favorite hardware reviewers:
    http://www.dansdata.com/x2040.htm
You can see where he linked to this forum thread in this sentence, about 2/3'rds into the article:

"If you use some other in-game voice communication system, you're out of luck; the X2040 supports TeamSpeak only at the moment. But whaddaya want for fifty bucks - it's certainly a lot easier than doing this."

Click on the last word, "this", and you will find yourself wisked off to this thread! Dan must think you're a hardware god! (which you are of course).

Sometimes I feel like 2/3'rds Rice Krispies. Past "Snap" and "Crackle" but just shy of "Pop"!
