If the US start to favour footy then they cannot help but to produce a world class team. They are already rated in the top 20 in the world (although a weak CONCACAF will boost this a bit) and have done well in the last few world cups for sure. And this is for a sport that most of your country doesn't even know the first thing about.

The big impact Beckham will make (and the reason for him going to L.A.) is that he has founded a youth academy there. With that sort of high profile backing, with a shed load of cash, you're bound to find a world class player or two. To be honest the trouble for the US is not in finding world class atheletes - it is convincing them to play footy and not another sport.

A-Rod signed a deal worth about the same me thinks.

I don't understand how he's getting paid ~$50,000,000 per year - I mean... does all of MLS gross that much per year? Much less one team??

The thing about Beckham is he has the ability to increase the the earnings of a club simply be being in the team. When Beckham moved form Manchester United to Real Madrid, Real Madrid overtook Man Unt as the richest club in the world. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4716174.stm
