Re: Help with Vacation choices

I've been to PR with some good success. Several friends have gone to DR with mixed reviews.

Given the choice, I wouldn't go to either place. I'd head back to Costa Rica. Been there twice, and it's a fantastic place for a vacation. Much lower crime rates than the other places mentioned.

Ah, yes, that's where I would go: Costa Rica or Panama!

Or Belize!

Hasn't happened yet in the 20+ countries I've been to. I'm more scared in the US. Most banks will overnight you a new card. I carry Amex for this reason. I don't travel first class either. I've stayed in many questionable places.

Use a travellers cheque card. Prepaid, with the same kind of assurances travellers cheques give (you get it swiped, and some low life draws on it, you get it replaced). Works in most atms and as a standard credit card.

Re: Help with Vacation choices

Hotel safes are wonderful things. I also leave a fedex envelop with my wife when we take the groups over to Europe. Already to send to me, it contains ....

a copy of my passport - just to help if I need to go to the consulate to get a replacement, a birth certificate, travelers checks (just 100-200 $ - enough to get me by for a day or so), a credit card, and a photo ID (a state issued ID card).

A bit of an overkill for a short trip like yours, but when we are leading groups, we like to be extra prepared.

Re: Help with Vacation choices

Sorry for the thread resurection, but I was just reading this:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundlan...l.html?ref=rss

and remembered this thread.

There has been quite a bit of chatter on talk radio here in Toronto about travel troubles in the Dominican (mostly questionable "charges" at the airport when leaving). Although I know many people that went and had a wonderful time.

I guess it all comes down to watching your bacon and taking the extra precautions.

Re: Help with Vacation choices

Never been to Puerto Rico, but my best friend is from there and has a bunch of family in the area. Apparently they live in the lower class areas, so I never hear good things about his trip :P The only pictures I saw from him were some high/drunk/cracked out guy running around with a couple machetes.
