I don't think people really use the latter three. Yeah, server admins and network admins do, but they aren't really "people" so much as job titles.

Novell is a damn fine network structure. It's very stable and is great for what it does. But you'll never see a Novell OS on the shelf at a BestBuy. It's not meant for people...it's meant for computers.

Unix is to Mac OSX what DOS is to Windows...it's the behind-the-scenes runtime language that makes the pretty little folder icons move around when you drag them with the mouse.
Yup, Unix can be a great standalone OS for a server...it's more stable than the surety that the IRS will want some taxes from you. Again though, it's a server structure and there's not much of a practical application for it when it comes to the average user.

Re: Mac or PC?

I've always liked windows, never cared for mac once upon a time, I still don't own one to this day, I don't have any need for one, although when those mac mini's came out, I thought that was a perfect time to get one, but never did. I've tried couple versions of linux, I'm a idiot when it comes to it, I couldn't even figure out how to install software on it. I think I had knoppix std linux.

XP is a great OS, Vista has gone 2 step backwards.

Re: Mac or PC?

I install linux like 5 times a year, only to realize that windows or mac can do everything i need quicker, more effciantly or better (usually all 3). games, presentations, web browsing, editing, etc. I think the only thing linux does better for me is decoding .shn files into wav files for cd buring (I have hundeds of live recordings from many bands that are encoded into a lossless compression called shorten). but now that they are all burned to audio I have no use for linux.

I wonder if linux can do video editing better? I will need to check that out soon. i guess it is time for another install...

Re: Mac or PC?

I only use UNIX (and its variants) except for gaming. It's stable and easier to secure. I don't have to go searching for third-party software whose quality I can't verify until it's rendered useless by the one attack it couldn't prevent. UNIX-like systems allow for the "Default Deny" security model without extra software (of note is OpenBSD's `pf`).

Also, have you ever tried transcoding in Windows? I've noticed it takes significantly longer, although I don't know why. It probably has something to do with the 32-bit architecture; I was running Gentoo Linux on an AMD64, and what DVDShrink did in one hour, transcode did in ten minutes.

Also, the modular infrastructure of UNIX-based systems is unbeatable if you're as nerdy as I am.
