Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Game Night Announced

At the bell, with only 4 of us present, between Root, Ninja, Someotherguy (sorry forget your name, ack! ), and myself; we decided to try our hand at vs. the AI to warm up and refresh our skills. And it’s probably a good thing we did too.

The first round, I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and the game was commenced while I had "Chaos" selected as my army (I'd been practicing Chaos earlier in the week as I want to learn them). I have had all of probably 1/2 hour's worth of experience with Chaos so needless to say, with the AI difficulty set to "hard" I got thumped on pretty early in the game.

The second round went a little better. We managed to repulse an Ork rush and annihilate its base early in the round, carrying the offensive deep into enemy controlled territories. Still not adjusted to the nuisances between DoW: Dark Crusade (the DoW flavor I play the most) and vanilla, I pressed a little too far forward and ran into a Space Marine base whose troops were both better equipped and out numbered my remaining forces from the Ork campaign by perhaps 2 to 1. They skunked my army most soundly and decided that it would be a good time to seek out and destroy my base too boot. :P The battle was fought valiantly by all, but so far the AI was 2 for 0.

Licking our wounds, we decided to inflict a handicap or two on the AI by turning the difficulty down a notch. Remembering the lessons (re)learned from the previous rounds, we pressed our advantages a little more cautiously this time, coordinating our efforts and massing troops together whenever possible. Root found his base under immediate attack early in the game and was compelled to farm turrets, saving his bacon and providing a good meat shield for the rest of us as we circled the map, annihilating one AI base after another.

We repeated the formula a second time before retiring for the evening with improved success evening up the score with the AI at 2-2.

I've always been intrigued by WH40k. If you guys do this again, let me know. I might pick up a copy.

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Game Night Announced

We're probably looking to go another couple rounds on Saturday, if you’re interested. While I and a couple guys have all the expansions, I'm not sure what flavors will be played. If you do decide to pick up on the game, the stand-alone expansion, WH40K: Dawn of War; Dark Crusade, will probably get you more bang for your buck to start. It allows you to play vs all 7 races, albeit you may only play as 2 out of the 7 (Tau and Necron) until you add the others to your collection. DC also contains improvements over the first two that make the game much more enjoyable overall. It's a good way to see how everything works without purchasing the entire run.

LoL@Ninja: TBH, I really don't know who was there apart from Root and I as everyone's names were different on screen and I don't know most people around here by voice on TS yet.

Incidentally if you don't have Company of Heroes either they have published CoH with DoW + Winter Assault included. Might be a UK only thing but they do (or did) exist.

I'm definitely up for a game of this today - please drop into the Eve Online channel if I'm there and bug me if you start up a game!

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Game Night Announced

Last Saturday we played at around 7pm EST. As no one has said anything differently, I'd imagine we'll probably hook up at around the same time today. I've wanted to get my hands on CoH as well but, unfortunately, my rig couldn't begin to handle the load.

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Game Night Announced

I have an IRC event at 3pm EDT today so I should easily be clear for a 7pm klckoff. Are we doing DC tonight? There's not a gameclub channel on the new TS setup but the 160th's channel will be clear so we can use that.

You can create new channels, just not registered (permanent) ones.

Anything'd be fine with me. Whatever the group is able to play in the end I guess.

Re: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War --- Game Night Announced

No, DC is an expansion pack and is required to play using any related assets. The thing about DC is that it is a standalone expansion, meaning that you can play vs all the races, but you can only play using the 2 (out of the 7) races that DC added until you add the other flavors to your collection.
