Re: i got this e-mail....

It's actually amusing this came up yesterday. I didn't comment on this until now because I wanted to be in the office with the information at hand:

IC3 just released their 2006 Internet Crime Report, in it they address the "Nigerian Letter Fraud" which covers these types of issues not only sourced from Nigeria but other countries as well. It has become more and more common to get e-mails such as this from the UK as well as Nigeria.

IC3 reports that this type of fraud accounts for 1.7% of the total dollar loss for all Internet related crime, but the average loss for people is the hightest amongst all forms of tracked Internet crime at $5,100 average per complaint. Auction fraud, being the most common and representing 33% of all losses only averages $602 per complaint.

I've attached the full report if anyone is interested in a bit of light bathroom reading.

Download Full 2006 IC3 Report

Re: i got this e-mail....

What I don't understand is HOW people fall for this. It is obvious that its a scam. I was watching Dateline one night and they had a segment on this sort of thing. Then it told stories of people losing there entire life savings to these scammers. It is really sad seeing people in this kind of situation.

Would you say that maybe 5 people in a million are just unreasonably ignorant when it comes to things like this? That's all it takes, the percentage of people that fall for this type of scam is miniscule, but when you're sending out millions upon millions of e-mails, you're bound to find SOMEONE that's stupid enough to provide their name/address and bank account number in hopes of getting their hands on a few million dollars.

Most people don't realize how sensitive that string of numbers is on the bottom of their checks.

Of course, that hasn't stopped some people from playing with them.
