Re: Reputation System
Well people can see a representation of your rep in your public profile (top right of the page). Getting +rep gives you more bubbles and makes a nifty little saying for you when you hover over them.
<---- The rep bubbles used to be displayed here, but bubble wars broke out and people were +repping each other for no good reason causing bubble inflation, jeopardizing the bubble economy

Re: Reputation System
The bubbles give an approximate clue, but 11 seems to be the maximum number of them. Early on 100 points = 1 bubble but I'm pretty sure that after x points it changes to 200 points per bubble. I don't know of a limit on rep points.
Personally I'm more interested in seeing who approves of my posts. It's nice when I get a variety of responses from different people.BFCL TF2 league admin

Re: Reputation System
I rarely look at my rep and I don't think many know it's there. So bump to this post.
The funny thing is how some of us don't really use the system as it's intended. Some like to give comments to a post through the rep system. I have a nasty habit of just giving out bad rep because I don't remember that the system is there unless I think somebody's post is completely useless, is a postCount++, or troll-like.
I suppose the system does give an idea of how well respected you are in the community. Although, we can find out just by the greetings you get when joining Teamspeak.
It's still a weird system to have on here though. I just don't like that the rep comments aren't anonymous. It really defeats the purpose of criticizing someone else's post. I find you just end up getting hate mail back for a valid rep comment...

Re: Reputation System
No, if they were anonymous, it would be pretty useless. I personally use the system as a means of initiating private communication sometimes; most of the time, it's a sort of silent notification of my agreement when posting such would be a waste of everyone's screen space. Also, when someone gives me -rep, I want to know *why*, which usually means I PM a response to them.

Re: Reputation System
Then I would at least want the option for anonymous comments. Otherwise, users can just dish out the neg rep back because they know who gave it. If you want to be known or discuss further a topic in a thread, there's always the PM system. I haven't looked closely at my rep comments but most of them are just "nice job" or "you're wrong, I'm right". I do get PMs once in a while that are more of a branch to the thread's topic.
Neg rep comments should explain why the post was bad. I do add valid comments to negative rep that I give so that should be enough. If it's something that requires a longer discussion, it's probably a difference in opinion, which shouldn't be a reason to give bad rep. It's probably better discussed through PMs.

Re: Reputation System
I think I've given negative rep twice and received it once (in return for one of the neg's I dished out
) ... anyway - how big an issue is it? are others giving/getting -rep a lot?

Re: Reputation System
2 +rep's a day? Wow. I rarely give +rep, only if I totally agree with something, or just think it's hilarious. And I give -rep even less. I think I might've done it once or twice.
So I kind of prefer to give +rep only in special occasions, just to keep it special.
Oh and I got -rep twice too, one time by *drums* ..well I won't call names, I can only say he's German and member of Bommando's crew and one time for a post in a topic which got deleted afterwards.
One question, though, I noticed I get different amounts of rep points for different +reps, can anyone tell me what causes this?

Re: Reputation System
Yeah, I give +rep to every new person that checks in to the "new SM" thread in the member's forum, and for any post that strikes me as being particularly good (or particularly bad). I try to make sure that rep is NOT a special thing for me. Perhaps that's why some people get so offended when I throw neg rep in their direction...
I think that it's weighted based on the giver's rep. So someone with a lot of +rep has more weight than someone with no rep or negative rep.One question, though, I noticed I get different amounts of rep points for different +reps, can anyone tell me what causes this?Become a supporting member!

Re: Reputation System
Yep, CingularDuality's -rep takes about six of the rest of you to make up for.
