Is this the same Alexa that used to be (still is?) a nasty ass spyware program that took me forever to get off of my computer a few years ago? I'd like to help out but I'd rather do it without installing spyware. Sorry.

Nasty-ass spyware program? Not that I'm aware of. Alexa is owned by Amazon these days. Some people HAVE considered Alexa "spyware" because it tracks the URLs you visit (which is pretty much required for any system to track traffic ranks of independent web sites) but I've never known it to be an application or plug-in that was difficult to remove.

The funny thing about this type of application is that many sites use a transparent 1x1 pixel graphic to do the same thing. Track users by IP and determine what sites they visit to perform traffic ranking amongst those sites, it accomplishes the same thing yet many people don't seem to worry about that type of activity nor do they consider it "spyware".

Being a network engineer and security professional for over a decade I would CERTAINLY not classify Alexa as any type of spyware.
