I'd hate to be the one to break it to you, but a career in software engineering isn't likely to get you reduced hours... (depends on the particular job, but speaking in general anyway.)

Yeah, I realize that, but I need to find something that I'm interested in. Then it won't seem so tedious.

Cool. I like my job and even though I generally work 50+ hours/week, it still seems to go by ridiculously fast. Now if only I could slow down time on the weekends...

There you go. MT's are in extremely high demand, and there are a lot of places in the country to work. It won't make you rich, but you'll earn a very good salary plus get to work with some very high tech toys if get into the right labs.

I'm a certified MT with a specialist in micro, worked as a bench MT for a few years, ran a micro/flow/molecular department then managed a lab before getting into hospital IT.

Also, experienced MT's are hired in droves in research labs because they have great hands on experience - my brother (also an MT) works for a pharm company making damn good money right now.

If I were you, I'd at least take a look into it. I had started my masters in clinical microbiology before deciding school was cutting into my hobbies to much, went and took my MT cert exam and it's been good for me ever since.
