I'm sure that Monkerz was not using the safety equipment available to him...

Re: Unions?!?!?

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Hope it works out for you in the end. I don't really know why a large contract would be in jepordy over someone spitting in a fountain (even though that is disgusting) I think they are just trying to prove a couple of points and hopefully it is a lesson learned on your part.

BTW I love my union.

Lets not even get on this subject. My first day there I was on a 12ft. step ladder running some wire, and was told that I needed to leave unless I had a harness. I went to I.S. and bought one for $300. My second day I was drilled for my safety glasses not being up to code(they didnt cover my whole face.) The second week, they hammered me for having wire layed out down a hallway against the wall WITHOUT caution signs(I guess so the people that walk through walls dont trip and break their neck.) So i had to leave and spend $250 on caution crap. 2 days after that they told me that I needed to pack my crap and leave unless i had a newer GFI(mine was used and beat up...BUT WORKED) So i had to buy a new GFI. They are relentless.

They're probably trying to keep you from doing something like, say, getting a mouthful of concrete dust.

Look at it from their point of view. They might get sued or something if they don't keep everyone in tip-top shape.

Re: Unions?!?!?

Big union shop ...they are probably an OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) . This is a program run by OSHA to get big manufactures and the like to proactively approach safety. Osha really makes a big deal about it and attaining VPP status is not a walk in the park. It involves a comprehensive approach to safety on all levels. The idea is -- if they are voluntarily ramping up safety programs according to OSHA guidelines that will prevent injuries.
As someone who helps to provide electrical safety programs I love working with VPP sites because they WANT to spend money on safety training.

Anyhow...your bosses have really let you down by not making sure you have the training and equipment to get the job done according to the clients specs and norms. Why are you responsible to buy the equipment and not your company...no don't answer that unless you want to.

I don't know all the facts...but why are you responsible for the purchases of the safety equipment. I guess you'll own it all when your done but it seems like your boss and company really let you down by not tuning you into the job requirements.
