Good luck with that. It's not an easy degree, but the payout can be worth it. My cousin earned that very same degree. He worked with the automotive industry aiding in design. He used to work for GM, married the VP's daughter, then worked for Toyota. Now he works for Hyundai. And oh yeah, he does very well. He makes a bunkload of money last I heard. So stick with it my friend and you can go far.

It's really amazing how many obviously smart people we have here in our little community (myself excluded). I like hearing what every one is doing. Good thread.

Re: Careers?

So I have to make a second response because I got A LOT of negative feedback about my comments to bucket about teaching. Apparently, some people failed to understand my point. I was trying to tell him that before being a teacher, he needs to make sure it's really what he wants to do, not because teachers suck, or because I'm trying to bring him down, but because teaching is quite possibly the most underfunded and underappreciated career out there.

Teachers have a huge burden of educating the future of the global society. Teaching is quite possibly THE MOST important profession on earth, seeing as no other professions would even exist if it werent for teachers. They are responsible for our doctors, our lawyers, our leaders and our thinkers at the most fundamental levels, yet they make chicken feed for pay and get very limited benefits. I WAS a teacher. I'm still accredited and qualified. However, I found that the pay I was getting left me in a huge deficit every month. I thought when I was done with college that my days of living off of ramen noodles and tap water were over, but I was wrong. Luckily, I was already pursuing a secondary degree, just so that I could pick up another job to augment my teaching pay. It turned out that my new career afforded me the opportunity to drop teaching and focus on being a nurse and make significantly more money.

When I said what I said, I was speaking form experience, no malice. I loved being a teacher. I plan on doing it again someday. But at this point in my life, when I have tens of thousands of dollars in student loans to pay off, as well as all of my monthly bills, saving for goals of staring a family and such, the amount of income that teaching allows just doesnt cut it. A lot of new teachers go into it thinking that it's the other way around. I was just giving a fair warning. If you dont believe me, take a trip down to your local high school and poll the teachers to see how many of them work another job on top of being a full time teacher. It's a harsh reality and it burns a lot of people, which is why I put the message out there.

So next time people would like to leave negative comments, re-read what was written, maybe gather a little background and examine the person's motives before you accuse them of being an ass.

Re: Careers?

Mainly I am the estimator for a road construction company that specializes in asphalt recycling. We work in numerous states from Texas to South Dakota, Missouri to New Mexico. We use a hot in place method to take up the old asphalt add in new oil and repave it like new asphalt.

Unfortunately I also am the only person with IT knowledge so I have to keep our servers running and basically work on anything that has a computer on it (seems to be growing every day).

My brother (Clawhammer) and I studied Urban Planning. I took a chance at transportation planning instead of city planning right out of college and found it was exactly what I was looking for. Lots of land use and environmental policy implications. The big exception is I do a lot more long range planning rather than just processing development apps- as you would most likely do for a city or county, unless you're updating a general plan. Anyway- just thought you might be interested in checking out another side of planning. Transportation will continue to be a huge field for engineers and planners as we enter the new decade. Being part of change and working with people to make those changes is exciting to me, but the money may not be as lucrative as it could be for a business executive.
