Re: Careers?

It looks as if UC Berkeley has changed there program. They use to offer Urban Planning and Transporation Planning as a dual major. That what I was going to go for. It looks like they have changed.

If you are working in the Field I would rather enjoy hearing from you about the job market in the bay area is like. I live over in the East Bay right now, and both my wife and myself like it here to much, despite the politics.

I have also sat in on a few SPUR Q&A sessions and am friends with one of the more famous SF Urban planning Blogers, Steve B.
My e-mail if so inclined is Jathnael(at)speedzoku(dot)com

Thanks a bunch in advance.

Anyway- just thought you might be interested in checking out another side of planning. Transportation will continue to be a huge field for engineers and planners as we enter the new decade. Being part of change and working with people to make those changes is exciting to me, but the money may not be as lucrative as it could be for a business executive.

I used to live on Naval Air Station Alameda when my dad was XO there. I love the bay area. I'm freaking jealous.

I'm not sure how the job market is in the Bay Area right now. I took a job in the Central Valley (where I went to high school) and I really don't plan on moving back to the bay for awhile. I do get notices for employment opps from Contra Costa County, but I'm not interested in them. The $$ is pretty good for starting out, but I prefer the quality of life over the $$ anyday.

As far as the actual job goes, I really enjoy it so far. I'm working on some long-term projects, ie updating our General Plan, but I also do small projects such as permits for minor-subdivisons, LAFCO projects, and a ton of GIS work. It's satisfying for now, but I've only been in the field for about 6 mos. Hope that helps even a tad

Re: Careers?

I do product design (industrial design if you know the actual term), work for a consulting company that basically comes up with ideas for companies that make products. We design pretty much anything from kids toys to high tech medical devices that inject radioactive pellets into people. Some of the more notable thing we have done are pretty much all the cuisinart blenders, and a bunch of other appliances for them. Ziplocs tupperware containers, and those little plastic flosser picks you see in stores now.

I also run a textile line of designer fabrics (like 500$ pillows and such) selling those to interior design firms around the city.

Oh ya and I am still working on my first degree in school, although I am starting to believe this whole graduation thing is just a rumor.

Re: Careers?

I'm a medical technologist, specializing in clinical microbiology - sometimes on the weekends when the hospital is short. My real job is supporting Meditech clinical modules in 18+ hospitals and 20+ clinics, not to mention dual hatting as our integration engineer (HL7 interfaces, scripting interfaces, etc).

Re: Careers?

I work as a Pathology assistant for Kaiser here in San Francisco Bay area. I do things like dissect all those things you get taken off your body when you go to the doctor and autopsies. It’s a heavely regulated industry (medical labs) so I do a fare amount of work keeping my lab ready for the next inspection.)

Blood and guts.
