The example I used is comparing the option of retaining my $500 rust-box or purchasing a new hybrid vehicle. I consider the $500 value of the rust-box negligable since the state's going to take a bigger chunk than that out of me. Moving a licence plate over? Quick! Impact fees hurray!

If someone is bereft of a vehicle than hybrid vs. non-hybrid variants of one model is a fine comparison, but nearly the entire population that those incessant advertisements are targeting already have wheels.

For the ultimate in gas mileage, turn off car, put it in neutral and get and out push...

I'm one of those for whom time is money. If I could drive safely more than 80 mph, I would. And I would also argue driving less than 50 mph on the Tollway in Dallas is tantamount to suicide. I would never recommend a 30 mph difference and EVERYONE else is doing 70+.

I've been around the Dallas loops a number of times. Talk about driving excitement. I can't help but imagine what it'd be like to miss a beat, careen off the top overpass, and catch six more on the way down. Not that one would survive the entire show.

The easiest way to get high MPG in your car is to drive a motorcycle .

That's what I used to do...until wife (now ex) trashed my credit, ran up bills, thus I was forced to sell my GSX-R last year to pay off some bad debts. Grrr. I'm still bitter about that one. I used to get around 60 mpg by not hauling butt everywhere. But oh well. I might as well squeeze what I can out of my car. I'm going to seriously try these tips on my next tank of gas and give you all a report.

Re: How to achieve insanely good mpg in your car

Motorcycles are good for fuel economy and just cruising but after my brother just crashed his(5-5-07) and died(buried him on 5-30-07) made me think twice about having my motorcycle license. Of course I know this can happen at any time with any type of vehicle just a motorcycle there is more of a chance of getting seriously injured or dying.

I had a '86 Chevy 3/4 ton 4WD truck with a stock 350, 4spd tranny and 35" mud tires and got between 22 and 27 MPG depending on how and where I drove it of course. The thing was a brute and all kinds of tire shredding power, wish I still had that truck, was STUPID for getting rid of it. My Jeep I have now with the 318 and full time 4WD gets 24 MPG. Not bad for a V8 engine and full time 4WD when I am reading most people with the 4.0L 6 bangers do good to get about 18 at the best. But I have noticed living here in WV MOST V8's will save you on gas when driving like a normal person than what a 4 or 6 cyclinder will due to the fact the smaller engines work harder to get up the hills around here and maintain the same speed than what a V8 has to. It's having the right power for the type of driving conditions, 4 and 6 cyclinders do better on flatter terrain than most V8's. Plus setting up the gearing in a vehicle properly can make a big difference, the Chevy truck I had owned had high gears for highway use but not good for pulling or hauling.

ANY vehicle can be made to get awesome mileage without making it illegal or unsafe, it is all in know how. Like my Jeep I have, I could improve MPG if I chose to do so, but then you consider the cost of making the modifications to do so!!! Sometimes it is only switching out the gears or tire size even to make a huge improvement others may require engine modifications to also help.
