Free Wireless Broadband in Philly?
I saw this article and my radar immediately went up:

Looks like a stepping stone to more taxes and government control of the Internet. I can't think of any other consumer service where the Gov't has such a large hand in destroying competition and free enterprise. Of course everyone would like to have a wifi hot spot wherever they go, but should it be the Gov't that does it?New to TG? Start here!

Re: Free Wireless Broadband in Philly?
A lot depends on how Philly handles it, really. If they start playing Big Brother and blocking certain sites and such at their sole discretion, then you're absolutely right.
If on the other hand, they keep things relatively open, then they're doing something PHENOMENAL for the city, and something I think you'd be hard pressed to find a private concern willing to do on its own.

Re: Free Wireless Broadband in Philly?
There are free wireless hot spots in Toronto. There aren't very many though. It's mostly downtown in a few cafes or shops. There are a few organizations here that provide a wireless hot spot service so that businesses can set one up. Word is getting out but right now the access poor. There's probably better luck wardriving for wireless networks.

I live in a free wifi zone. All the buildings here are too old to re-wire, so they've got several blocks around the school hooked up. I'm all for it!

Re: Free Wireless Broadband in Philly?
I'd be quite happy to pay $39 for 256k.
