Re: Ghost Recon 2 Videos and Screenshots

Yeah, now that I think about it, didn't they say the XBox team would be developing the PC version? Earlier in the interview this guy said he was working on the XBox version, so shouldn't he be working on the PC one too???

What does that mean exactly? What do they do to port a game to PC, and how does it affect our playability?

Re: Ghost Recon 2 Videos and Screenshots

I've talked to somebody working for a small game company here in Ottawa and they've developed for XBox, PS2 and PC. I was shown a demonstration of an XBox game with an XBox dev kit and on a PC. The guy said they pretty much develop a PC game keeping in mind the constraints the XBox has. This means keeping texture sizes down, designing levels to not show too much detail at once and programming tricks to keep performance up. The game I saw was done very well and I think would port nicely to PC, if they ever did one.

If you've ever played Deus Ex 2, you'll see what could go wrong with an XBox port. DE2 has frequent load spots and small areas to battle the memory limits of the XBox. If you've played some other console ports like Dino Crisis, you notice the 'console feel'. The interface is very simple to accommodate gamepads. A port usually has you doing everything with the keyboard with very little mouse control. You might even complain about the texture resolutions, some objects look pixelated. Although, it might not be so bad since consoles are increasing in memory capacities or the devs might resize the textures for PC.
