Discussion: Ghost Recon / Ghost Recon - General Discussion - If I Like CS:s, will I like Ghost Recon? - Any Advice? i like the first person shooter Style of CSS mixed with team playing
Any Advice? i like the first person shooter Style of CSS mixed with team playing and strategy. Will this fit the Ghost Recon games?
thanks,
Ben
A battle is dynamic, i.e constantly changing and evolving. Follow the strategy in place but never be afraid to improvise if the situation calls for it. All I ask for is communication
Well, that depends. If you like a single mission to last 45 minutes or so and are willing to deal with the fact that when you die you get to sit out the rest of the mission, very possibly!
GR is a MUCH slower game than CS:S.
Diplomacy is the art of saying "good doggie" while looking for a bigger stick.

Ben you will LOVE GR. Its alot slower then CSS, but with your game mentality and your way of planning i think you will really fit in with the TG GR crowd. Its really a different game when played with the likes of wyz mateo Hhour strag Magnum and the other new GR players like myself. Jump on TS tonight( GR night) and listen into the chatter and stuff. Yes its online multiplayer
If you need anyhelp getting setup let me know i will point you in the right direction.
Ebay has it for sale, amazon has it for sale...not sure about ebgames or gamestop.
I don't know CS:S, but my impression is that it's a pretty action-paced game. Ghost Recon is built around suspense more than action. It can seem very slow to people transitioning from other games, but the level of coordination required provides quite a bit of suspense. If you're looking for teamplay and strategy, you'll find it with Ghost Recon. But some people prefer a certain pace to their gaming experience, and you might have a hard time adjusting to Ghost Recon's slower pace.
With your IDF/Border Police experience I'd be willing to bet you'd fit into our structured play style pretty easily and could probably bring quite a bit of real-world experience to bear on our tactics. Read over some of our SOPs in the GR SOP forum and you'll get a sense of how we try to play this game and how the pace is considerably slower than most games.
Currently, we only really play Ghost Recon in multiplayer Coop mode, though it supports player vs. player gameplay. For us, this means gameplay is broken up into "missions". Each mission has a set of objectives on a particular map, and we usually take anywhere between 20-45 minutes to play a successful mission. We play with no respawns, which means a team inserts with a specific number of players and anyone who dies must wait until extract or mission failure to start again. Many or most missions end in failure. The no-respawn element and the mission difficulty provides the most reason for our intense, slow-paced gameplay. Without it, mission completion would be nearly impossible.
In addition, GR has a lot of elements built into its movement/fire mechanics that prevent run-and-gun tactics. Keeping control over your aim is central to success, so movement is slowed down, which generally promotes the use of real-world tactics (though GR is still a long way from approximating a real-world combat situation).
Ben, if you decide to take the plunge and try GR, I have a brand-new copy for sale still in the shrink-wrap. It's the Gold Edition on DVD - includes both expansions. $20 including shipping. PM me if you're interested.
Darkilla: In short, NS is pretty much really fast chess. With guns. Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Zephyr: Apophis is clearly a highly sophisticated self-aware AI construct that runs on a highly modified toaster oven in Wyzcrak's basement.
It's not a run and gun shooter, it's not even PCS-it's a different animal altogether. It requires more communication, team execution, and planning than what you typically see on PCS #1-in other words, it's just the sort of thing you need when you get frustrated with the lack of teamplay on that server.
Ghost Recon, even the new GRAW demo, rewards slow, methodical, well planned execution.
My gameplay in every other first person title at TG -- hell, even commanding in NS -- fast and slow, has benefited from my experience playing GR at TG.

Apo, does the mutiplayer gameplay take 40 minutes a round?
Yes
It's highly probable that it will take that long in many cases. Considering the level of difficulty we normally play this game at, it was VERY common in the GR days to end up close to running out of time and having to start taking risks in order to complete the mission within the 45 minute time limit.

The games we've been playing lately have a 45:00 clock, which counts down as you play. To say GR rounds take 45 minutes is to say PCS rounds take 7 to 9. Can rounds last that long? Yes. Do all rounds last that long? No.
If I had to guess, I'd say 30 minutes is a better representation of how long GR rounds take, on average. That's after five to seven minutes of pre-insertion planning (before the round starts).
Someone said GR is about suspense, and he's right. Yes, you get to sit out and observe for the rest of the round if you die, but suspense is still suspense in third person. Yes, if you're looking exclusively for ACTION ACTION ACTION, other TG titles long to appease you, but GR will often fail in its efforts to do so. If you're looking for suspense and teamplay, GR wins.

This is a great way to summarize the GR experience and player expectation.

i think we have even done that in past weeks, just sitting trying to find out a good way to do things in the game itself before we start moving could take 10 minutes or so. I ussually end up sitting for 30mins cause i do something stupid, but its great fun.
I think this of all the games i would recommend to anyone to play
As with my other posts, this is addressed to the reader... the prospective GR player... not just Ben.
You see Apophis' GRAW post about player expectations. It reads ominously, as Apophis doesn't screw around when it's a game he plays, but it's awesome how much hospitality and patience new GR players are shown -- by Apophis on down -- once they make it clear (explicitly or otherwise) that they've comprehended (reading means nothing otherwise) the SOPs once or twice and have listened in on a few rounds in TS before playing. I'm sure the same will prove true for GRAW in time. One day, when I take out a second mortgage to upgrade my machine, I look forward to being the recipient of that warmth here with GRAW just as I was so long ago with GR.
It's good peoples playing GR here, "new" or not, and Apophis is making sure good peoples plays GRAW here (that should hardly be a challenge, given who's shown interest in it).
The point is: don't be unduely intimidated by all of this SOP/dothisright/dothiswrong crap. Read the SOPs, buy the game, listen to others' play a few rounds in TS, and then join us.
Be a little anxious about including yourself in TG's most respected title. I was. I think it's healthy. But know that you are encouraged to join us as a peer.

It is not often that I encounter across myself when researching a topic. I found the following in a recent article on the uses of ethnography in virtual environments:
