SOP (Radio) - The Fire Mission

SOP (Radio) - The Fire Mission

The Ghost Recon simulation does not currently provide for any fire support from a mortar section or an artillery battery, however, using other team members who may be carrying rifle grenades makes for a reasonable substitute. The rifle grenades modeled in GR have a killing radius of 7- 8 meters, which is approximately one quarter of the size of any individual grid square on a map. Keep this in mind when estimating the possible effectiveness when deciding to use a rifle grenade barrage or not.

Once the remainder of the fire team have been alerted to the enemy presence using the SOP (Radio) - The Contact Report , then the fire team member observing them may decide to call a suppressive fire mission over the TeamSpeak radio channel, employing rifle grenades fired by another team member.

There are TWO types of Fire Missions, DIRECT and INDIRECT. The difference is simple. The DIRECT Fire Mission is one where the individual firing the rifle grenades has identified and can see the actual target himself through a direct line of sight. The INDIRECT Fire Mission is one where the individual firing the rifle grenades CAN NOT see the actual target and will be forced to fire blind (often over an obstacle) using corrections provided by a forward observer.

Example of a DIRECT Fire Mission where Eternal has no rifle grenades, but checking character screen shows that Badger does:

|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "Badger, this is Eternal ..... Fire Mission .... Grid Reference D12 (spoken over radio net as Delta One Two) .... enemy infantry in section strength patrolling on east side of large building .... identify and engage"

Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Fire Mission .... Grid Reference D12 (spoken over radio net as Delta One Two) .... enemy infantry in section strength patrolling on east side of large building .... identified ..... engaging"

Badger has scanned the map and ground to his front looking for the enemy that Eternal has observed. He has identified the target and will independently engage it using standard ranging techniques. He will fire one grenade at a time, observing it's impact area and then correct with additional ranging rounds until the impact is directly on the enemy position. At that point he will fire in rapid succession as many of his remaining rifle grenades it takes for him to neutralize the target. The radio net voice procedure would continue as follows:

Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Round away" (single ranging round fired)
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Round away" (single ranging round fired)
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "On Target ... Fire for Effect" (ranging round on target and several rounds are now fired in rapid succession)
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Target neutralized .... Cease Fire"
|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "Target neutralized ... End Fire Mission"

Example of a INDIRECT Fire Mission where Eternal has no rifle grenades, but checking character screen shows that Badger does:

|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "Badger, this is Eternal ..... Fire Mission .... Grid Reference D12 (spoken over radio net as Delta One Two) .... enemy infantry in section strength patrolling on east side of large building .... identify and engage"

Badger responds over TeamSpeak: "Fire Mission .... Grid Reference D12 (spoken over radio net as Delta One Two) .... enemy infantry in section strength patrolling on east side of large building .... Target not identified ..... send corrections"

Badger can not visually identify the target himself and has therefore requested of Eternal to correct the fall (impacts) of his ranging rounds using standard ranging techniques. Badger will fire one grenade at a time (estimating barrel angle) with Eternal observing it's actual impact area and correcting Badger's fire with additional ranging rounds until the impact is directly on the enemy position. At that point he will instruct Badger to fire in rapid succession as many of his remaining rifle grenades it takes to neutralize the target. The radio net voice procedure would continue as follows:

|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "Roger .... Target not identified ..... will correct"
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Round away" (single ranging round fired)
|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "Identified .... Left 25"
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Left 25 .... Round away" (single ranging round fired)
|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "Identified .... Add 50"
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Add 50 .... Round away" (single ranging round fired)
|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "Identified .... Drop 25"
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Drop 25 .... Round away" (single ranging round fired)
|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "On Target .... Fire for Effect"
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "On Target ... Fire for Effect" (rounds are fired in rapid succession until Eternal indicates stop)
|42nd| Eternal says over TeamSpeak: "STOP .... Target neutralized .... Cease Fire"
Badger says over TeamSpeak: "Target neutralized .... Cease Fire ... End Fire Mission"

Note that all corrections are sent in meters. It is standard procedure to send corrections for lateral line (left and right) first, followed by corrections for distance (add and drop). Also, corrections may be combined in one radio transmission such as "Left 25, Add 50". Refer to SOP (Tactics) - Map Grid References for details on how to use the Tactical Gamer Grid Reference system. Also, refer to SOP (Radio) - Phonetic Alphabet for details on pronouncing grid references over radio net.

After a bit of practice using this technique, it becomes almost second nature and makes it much easier to bring devastating high explosive fire against enemy threats. We would encourage all players on any Tactical Gamer Ghost Recon public server, to utilize this standard methodology for Fire Missions as much as possible.
