M02 Farm AAR - 2006-06-01
Hey, so I thought I'd do a little AAR on one our split-team mission last night. I'll do a broad platoon AAR and give Bravo's AAR, and hopefully Alpha or Charlie can give their own AARs. I've drawn up this diagram of our movement, so that we can see how we all fit into the big picture.

A1: The letter stands for the squad and the number is the chronology. All positions marked with the same number are simultaneous. So, when Alpha was at position A1, Bravo was at B1 and Charlie at C1.
Platoon-wide movement
This mission is particularly easy for platoon-wide movement, as each objective's relative position to the insert presents obvious, direct, mutually supporting firing positions. As we each moved directly to our positions, the squads on our left or right were simultaneously covering our flanks and, for much of the mission, could interdict any reinforcements.
Positions 1
This mutually supportive stance helped us on our very first engagement. En route to positions 1 on the map, Charlie engaged targets on the hill around grid squares B10/B11. In response, enemies came running north towards Charlie. Bravo's position just southeast of Charlie allowed us to eliminate those targets before they were a threat to Charlie. It was a perfect example of flanking. Alpha drew the targets north and Bravo hit them from the side.
Alpha was the first to reach positions 1 on the ridgeline, but Bravo and Charlie were able to reach their positions soon afterward. Positions 1 were excellent, giving us a broad sightline across the river, leaving little opportunity for any enemies to get between our lines.
What could have been improved?
Even when working as individual squads, we need to pay very close attention to what our other squads are doing. When Charlie engaged the enemies on the hilltop, Bravo was out in the open. I was following everyone's radio communications early on, and I heard Charlie's command to engage the targets on the hill. I was able to radio to Bravo to take cover before Charlie engaged. In the future, it would be wise for squad leaders to check where other squads are. If engaging targets may expose other squads to danger, those squads should be alerted. Also, if there is a possibility of tangos responding across other squads' paths, they should be alerted so they can prepare. This is all, of course, dependent on having proper time to set up on the enemy without alerting them.
Positions 2
Once we crossed the river, we were spread out enough that we no longer had mutually supporting fire positions. This was necessary for the completion of our objectives.
What could have been improved?
Alpha engaged to the south just as Bravo was crossing the river. This caught us a little off guard and disrupted our tactical movement (see the post on Bravo's AAR for more on this). Our response was poor and this is our fault, but if Alpha had let Bravo know about their engagement, we could have prepared better.
Positions 3
After subduing their threat, Alpha was quick to begin tackling their objective. Nice work. From my perspective, your run seemed very cleanly done. Bravo was still trying to recover from our disrupted positions and we got spread out. I believe Charlie lost a man at Position 3, but I'm not sure of any of the details.
Positions 4
After rescuing the friendly, Alpha headed back for extraction. Bravo made its way slowly toward the house, but Charlie was still engaging targets to our north and we had a nearby rise obstructing our view. I wanted to take precaution moving west until I felt Charlie was in control of their situation.
What could have been done better?
It's my fault for not letting Alpha know what to do, but in the future, if an objective is complete, the squad lead should contact the platoon lead and ask for further orders. In this case, I would have had you support Bravo's convergence on the house.
Positions 5
By this time Alpha/Charlie objectives were complete and they had swept the ridgeline. My goal was to have them secure the ridgeline so that Bravo could move quickly back to them under cover. Enemies spawned on top of them, though. Totally cheap. Bravo secured the hostage and once Alpha had taken out the spawning enemies, the mission auto-ended.
What could have been done better?
Initially my goal was to have Alpha/Charlie finish their objective and be able to provide Bravo with exterior cover while Bravo entered and cleared the house. I don't know if Leejo would have survived had we done that, but I would have felt more comfortable.
Conclusions
All-in-all, I think we did good trying this out. I can only speak for Bravo about individual tactics, but I thought we did a good job of keeping each other covered and taking out threats quickly. This mission was built for the split-platoon technique, though. Don't expect any mission to be this easy when splitting squads. That's why I had us run through it as our first run. Next time we will try C02 - Military Base. It's another mission with clear benefits to the split-platoon technique, but the mission itself will be much more demanding on the individual squads.

Bravo AAR
Bravo did a good job all around, but I had two old GR'ers to "command", so it went really smooth. The concept was to let Alpha/Charlie wrap around us on either side, and for us to just hold the middle and interdict any enemies we could.
What went right?
1. En route to Positions 1, we were able to interdict tangos from a safe distance. Had we been farther up the hill, the tangos would have run on top of us.
2. We all had good cover and concealment the whole way through. This was particularly useful around the house, when we had to engage several targets.
What went less than right?
1. When Alpha engaged to our south, we were very distracted. We were en route to Position 2 across the river when they engaged. I was giving overwatch while Magnum and Leejo moved across. Hearing the fire, they both moved to set up firing positions towards the south. Leejo continued to creep farther south in an effort to engage targets. This left our northern flank open and Leejo was in a position that neither Magnum nor myself could support well without moving out of the squad's intended position. It took us a while to set ourselves back up and focus on our objective. Had we been engaged during this time I don't think we would have survived well.
It is my fault for not providing clear orders when Alpha engaged. I moved across to try and cover our northern flank, but I did not ask for any status report from Leejo. As a result, I was unaware whether Leejo was able to provide critical support to Alpha, or whether he needed to be pulled back up. I let him go and by the time we got reoriented, Leejo was approaching the house on a very different trajectory from Magnum and myself.
2. We should have cleared the exterior of the house much better before assaulting the house. Had we gotten everything clear, all three of us could have assaulted instead of leaving one person outside to watch for any response. Ideally, Alpha/Charlie could have covered the exterior, but regardless we should have cleared then entered.

Alpha AAR
I think Alpha did a good job geting up to the objective unseen. We took up positions around the farm and on cue we took down 8+ guys fast. I moved straight on the farm while Bribird moved from the west and Strag moved around on the east. As they were moving around the backside Bribird got shot from the 2nd floor window in the barn. Strag came around the other side and eliminated the last guy.
What went right?
1. Getting to the target unseen.
2. We had good cover when we initially attacked the barn and had all angles covered.
What went wrong?
1. When we took out the guys outside the barn I told Bribird to move around and check the back. I should of had Strag move up the other side at the same time. Instead Bri took out a guy on the ground then got hit from the 2nd floor window.

Re: M02 Farm AAR - 2006-06-01
My memory of Bravo's movements is a little different. I remember our crossing the river along the Delta line. As I recall, we wound up at approx D8 before moving more directly South to the target. For 10-20 meters I moved along the river bed while H and Magnum moved more directly SSW toward the objective and this put a little gap between us.
2 things: 1) I engaged an unaware target across the field (approx. D3 maybe) without alerting H and Magnum so they we could set ourselves up - take cover and watch flanks and read. Since the tango wasn't an immediate threat I should have given H the opportunity to set us up or choose to bypass.
2) Yes in hindsight we should have cleared the building 360 degrees prior to entering. This might have given us the additional benefit of shooting from a distance people standing in windows instead of attempting to engage them close.
I died because of a classic CQB no-no. Magnum and I entered the house from the South. He lead, moving N along the W wall of a room and looking NE and E. I entered and hugged the S wall, movng E, but also looking E into a room there. This left NW unobserved, and that's where the guy was who killed me. My job there was to enter, turn right, and sweep rapidly anti-clockwise to clear the room. I basically got stuck at 1 on the clock face and left 11 wide open.

Re: M02 Farm AAR - 2006-06-01
From reading those other AARs i think charlie had the easiest mission. We followed the fence up the hill and engaged 2 targets, all was clear until we go to the feild with the downed jet. We crossed the river with no resistance. Got up the bank and got behind cover, the field had atleast 15 armed gaurds in it. After we cleared the immediate danger by the jet, Fried and myself tried to move around the jet but i was taken down.
Mirfee stayed back because he had the demo. Which now rethinking that just one person with demo thing was a mistake. Since he was the only one with demo he was held back so he dint die, if we had all had demo we could have moved more effectively because we would all have been equal.
After Fried moved around the left side and rear of the plane he let mirfee know it was all clear. Mirfee moved in to plant and then extracted to the LZ. On their way out some enemies spawnd behind charlie and i believe took down the rest of my squad.
Things to improve...not really sure, we completed our task and extracted. Like i said before all of us should have taken demo, so we could have just moved in and done our job.that sounds like a good idea trooper.

Leejo, I am 99% sure you're disoriented about our movements. I remember very well our movement across the river, when Alpha engaged to the south, and how we became souther-oriented around G11. I remember because I was trying to cover looking through the trees F9/F10. There is no way you engaged anyone to the north, because from the moment we crossed the river you were the southern-most element of Bravo, and Magnum and I approached along the north side of the field, Magnum in the recess and myself along the tree-line. I think you're just criss-crossing the directions, thinking you were covering north when you were really covering south.
Trooper, I still disagree strongly with you about the demo charges. I think if we develop better capabilities with our secondaries, and more confidence in using them without prompting, the downside to loading up on demolitions experts to complete one objective will be clear. What does everyone else think? I don't want to keep harping on the issue, but I rarely see people taking GLs and I rarely see Frags or GLs used without prompting. Would people like a little bit of training with GLs so we can be more confident using them? I remember back in the day the 42nd devoted several practices just to indirect fire with GLs, and it was an incredibly useful tool both in Coop and MP.

What the hey, I totally missed seeing this thread!
Nice write-ups, guys. I really enjoyed this style of play, and am looking forward to doing it again next time on C02 - Military Base. We can work to improve the things that didn't go so well.
