Compact team
I just grabbed GR from a friend a few days ago and have been playing for hours upon hours; even when I'm not playing, I find myself thinking about new team configurations and methods of attack. I wasn't all that surprised to find a whole forum dedicated to tactics for this game.
Anyway, I've been chewing on an idea for a little while about a new sort of team configuration (single player), and I'm not sure how it may work. I'm gonna go about trying it in a few hours, probably, but I'm curious to see if anyone else has tried it anyway. What I'm planning on doing is reducing the number of teammates to three, possibly four.
In single player on recruit, it isn't very difficult to leave your team behind and clear out the map on your own. I decided to play some veteran missions, and they are certainly harder so far, but I'm still finding that I'm not really using my team. I simply put a demolitions expert on alpha team and sneak around, clear rooms, and complete demo missions. I'm going to step up to elite right now and try out my idea of a compact team. There will be one man on each team most likely, for flexibility and maneuverability, hopefully, and they will probably change depending on the mission.
My A team will be the demo guy, who will basically perform most tasks. The other two will mainly be support for heavy firefights, escorting hostages, or extra recon. In recruit and veteran, I noticed it is possible to engage decent range and close quarters solely with the demo expert, but I'll see how it changes in elite.
My B team will almost certainly be a rifleman; depending on the mission, the soldier with either be one with the rifle/grenade launcher combo or the silenced submachine gun. He (or she) will help cover A and provide some more firepower in confrontations.
My C team will be a supporting class; support or sniper, generally. The former can provide suppression while A or B flanks, while the latter can clear out enemies or draw them into a trap.
I realize that some missions may require me to assign more men. If there is going to be a very heavy firefight, I could put two riflemen on B team or a rifleman and another demo expert.
Anyway, what do you guys think? Is this just a plan doomed to fail, or could it provide a unique way of playing?

Re: Compact team
One of the reasons I tired of SP quickly was because your teammates are incompetent to the point of being useless.
The standard GR and official expansions are all about the scouting and setup. Once the bullets start to fly, your friendlies are either in a useful position or they're not. Even if they are in a useful position, usually only the lead actor in each squad is positioned properly to take advantage of the position. As a result, the extra teammates tend to remain inconsequential.
Because of this, I usually relied mostly on myself as the sole member in Alpha, either rifleman or sniper. I would back that up with a rifleman and demo (m136 or frags) in Bravo, and they would act as my primary flanking or ambush squad. In Charlie I would dump an extra demo (frags or charges), rifleman and sniper, only relying on them if my other guys went down.
If you're doing the campaign, of course, you should try and insert with the same team every single mission, adjusting to add new heroes as you go. You want to accumulate as many experience points as possible, so even if a sniper is totally useless on a particular mission, if he's part of your team bring him along. In particular, I usually complete the POW Camp mission with only Jack Stone, but I always bring my whole squad and leave them at extract so that they get the points. You will need those experience points later and they really do turn your AI from bumbling idiots into reasonably effective soldiers.
Once you get done with the official campaigns, definitely look into some mods. There are several fantastic mods out there, and the official campaigns tend to throw enemies right in front of you, reducing the risks on your flank and rear, and, therefore, reducing the usefulness of your team. Unfortunately you've come to GR a little late, and it won't be terribly easy for you to find a good, team-oriented coop game, but if you can, it will change your GR world.
