Expectations: Performance levels and Peer reviews

In light of the recent post about the changes being made to Resurgent, Sajier and I would like to communicate some of the details that we mentioned previously. There are two specific areas of expectations: performance levels and peer reviews. Please read the following, and let us know your feedback.

PERFORMANCE LEVELS
Everyone: We expect low early-fight or needless death counts for everyone. Examples of this would be pulling aggro off the tank and dying, or not avoiding Lurker's spout. These are mistakes that, certainly after the first one or two attempts, no one should be making.

DPS classes: We expect to see a minimum of 700 dps during a given boss fight. Properly buffed (including food and pots/flasks), this should not be an issue for anyone on most fights. We understand that there are certain fights that may place certain other demands on particular classes or players which may cause them to dip below that limit. That's fine. We'll obviously be paying close attention to context when reviewing these numbers. Please go back and look at older WWS reports. If you consistently do not meet this limit, please talk to Sajier and/or myself.

We will also compare DPS levels between members of the same class. If there are significant disparities, we will probably want to have a conversation. Again, we'll keep in mind considerations such as differing specs or roles during fights. For people who are alone in a particular class, comparisons will likely be made with other similar classes.

Healer classes: Assuming non-egregiously low healing numbers (HPS, overheal, decurses, etc.), performance will mostly be evaluated on the basis of peer reviews. Similar to DPS classes, we will make comparisons between members of the same class.

Tank classes: Performance will be based on peer reviews.

PEER REVIEWS
We plan to ask for the first round of peer reviews during the first weekend of Februay (Feb 2nd and 3rd). After that, we plan to conduct similar reviews over the first weekend of every month, though we may choose to solicit feedback more/less often, depending on the overall performance of the platoon.

The way these will work is, people will be split into certain "groupings", and each person will make comments on everyone in his/her grouping. You can also feel free to comment on other players not in your grouping if you feel that there is reason to do so.

The groupings are as follows (hopefully you know which grouping you fall into):
  • Caster DPS
  • Non-caster ranged DPS
  • Melee
  • Tanks
  • Healers
These comments will be sent to Sajier and me only. We will keep these comments private and will never do a "well, person A said this about you". We're serious about this, and we will not violate people's trust. If you would like to comment on Sajier or myself, you can feel free to send that comment to the other person, though we're both mature enough to accept any feedback from anyone.

This will obviously only work with your honest and detailed opinions, so please approach it with a degree of seriousness.

The overall goal here is a constructive one. We're not trying to gain ammunition against anyone or create a vicious atmosphere. We're simply trying to provide a means by which people can express their concerns about certain players in a private and controlled manner. We're venturing into challenging areas, so we need everyone at the top of their game. If we can find out about a potential problem quickly and work to address it, then we're all better off, and we can hopefully then move forward more quickly. Please don't think that any constructive criticism of fellow platoon mates is a negative thing. We're all in this together, and with everyone's input, we will be stronger.

Re: Expectations: Performance levels and Peer reviews

I am hoping that these reviews will not exclusively function as a negative, big brother sort of situation where people are worried that their peers will make them look like they aren't a quality member of the platoon. The opportunity to say, for example, that someone is a pleasure to play with, is enthusiastic, is self-motivated or is a positive influence on morale should be accounted for as well. I hope ultimately that the purpose of these reviews will be to enhance our strengths and support us as we work out our weaknesses and fortify our team.

Re: Expectations: Performance levels and Peer reviews

I should have to agree with luna--there are people that makes mistakes, if this is going to be used to pick apart and point those out--this is NOT a realistically good idea for use.

IF we are wanted a perfectionist' based squad--thats going to turn this into a blame game, and blame games are HARDCORE raiders--and its going to lead to the failing of this platoon 100%--i've been in this situation a few times past, trust me.

Perfectionist' Squads are in BT/Hyjal and theres a lot of dang drama in those, that's something i personally don't want to see in this platoon nor the guild. Lets' not let this get out of hand!

This game is end game, and we are progression quite well, i am all for helping out--but we don't necessarily need to be saying "Psst, 'x' is a pos healer--someone needs to talk to them, if you have something to say, let them know in front of everyone, be polite--and by all means, you had better know how to play the class your offering opinions for! I joined this guild because I saw potential and a good bunch of people, let's keep it that way

I'm not going to say im perfect, i'm not gonna say im good--I make mistakes, last night alone i was trying to heal a couple before lurker popped up--well the timer was off i shouldn't have waited so long for the timer, and he came up--i was on deck, that was my fault and it VERY well could have wiped us all, the point is--i admit my mistakes! Can you? If you can, can you correct them? Can you face the fact there might be someone who might want to "Bark at you" for it--I can--because i don't care--if i am here, i am always my 100%--that doesn't mean i WON'T make a mistake--but i am my 100%

With this being said, let's go kick some butt and see where this "Expectation list" takes us....

Re: Expectations: Performance levels and Peer reviews

Agreed, Ghost and Luna. Things may sound harsh, but this process will only be as harsh as the people "administering" it make it (i.e. me and Sajier). And I can tell you that we're not going to let this get out of hand. Contrary to what people may think, I'm a very reasonable and level-headed guy; as is Sajier. We won't let this become drama-filled, and we'll certainly keep things in check.

In addition to all that, these things can change. We may very well drop this minimum dps requirement or alter it to something else that works better. It's a living process, and we welcome people's suggestions. The reason this came about was our stagnation. We KNOW that we can get far into end game with this group. We were floundering for months, and then all of a sudden we're sitting at 4/6 bosses down in SSC. How did we turn it around so quickly? It's all about focus and attitude (and yes, some skill and knowledge of your class). Sajier and I are trying to get those things to be at consistently high levels. That's all. Not trying to be perfect.

We all want to succeed. All we're asking from you is that you proactively put some effort into making sure that you're playing your toon at (or near) the highest level that you can. If you do that, I think everything will fall into place nicely.

Re: Expectations: Performance levels and Peer reviews

I for one can see something good coming out of this. Yes I see the concern of the "blame game" happening here but the actual point of this "check up", if you will, is to HELP the said person in question do better at what they are doing. NOT to say,
" Hey your doing poorly and that sort of activity is not best for the group. Shape up in the next raid or your out."

Absolutely not. This is to:

1) See who is having trouble keeping up with their healing-dps-tanking
2) Address the person in question and find out if they feel they could use some improvement
3) And to then gather people with a knowledge on how to play said persons class/roll and simply give advice on how to do their job(roll) in raid a little better.

EXAMPLE:
Dryne and I are CONSTANTLY talking about how to find a better casting sequence to optimize our dps in raid. The only reason we realy can work that way is the fact that I have played mage 90% of my WoW-life (sad as that is to say and I have extensively looked at other mages casting sequences and tallent specs. As well as played every friggin talent spec imaginable.

Dryne might say ( if I may be so bold dryne <3 )
"Hey I should be doing alot more damage in raid but I just don't get it. I think it's my spec or casting rotation I'm not sure?"

Or I might see him falling behind myself. You will never.. ever see me telling someone else in raid "hey , D has been falling behind alot this time I think you should talk to him or sumthing". I ask what spells he's casting and how fast and in what order then give him my idea to do so faster. 11 times outa 10 mister Dryne ends up doing much better just for having discussed some different ideas on what to cast and what talents to go for.

I do the same thing for myself as well. I see myself falling behind in raid sometimes and getting myself stuck way low in the DPS. I have to end up rethinking what I did that raid to loose so much DPS and by checking a damage meter chart I can figure that out quite quickly. Most of the time it's me panicking and using a big heal when my health is low instead of casting more lightning bolts and I can see that through the damage meters data as well as remembering what I was doing. I ended up having to put more faith in the healers and realize that I can just keep non-stop casting lighting bolts (damage ablities) rather than slow my dps down worrying about my health. Or even to reposition during a fight. Time not casting is dangerous for my dps. I'd just as soon pit it out where I am in a small circle rather than readjust to an exact spot in the room and only then begin my casting. Or even if I must move back to my old spot that does not mean I have to stop doing damage. Every class has instant abilities. USE THEM while moving! Keep your damage going! This is how I manage to keep my dmg level up so high in raids.

Back to the main point. I'm sure.... so very sure that this review is to specificaly find a problem area in your spot in the raid, and to then use friends to help you find a better way if not more efficient way to do what your doing in raid. Please PLEASE don't freak out about this. I have so much faith in Gaviin and Sajier. I've never seen them to poke and prod at people's problems ever... unless it was just for fun and sarcastic. Never in a real attempt to grind you up over what they're doing wrong and threaten them to do better or get out. (nor would Luna or Beep allow it I'm sure <3 mwa hahaha).

Again (repetition helps ), DON'T BE AFRAID OF THIS REVIEW. This is to help you. Not condem you.

Though if after getting several people to help you with a problem your having constantly in raid, and many many attempts in trying to solve your problem in raid, that there is no improvement whatsoever, I'm afraid that it would most likely be best if you stepped out for a while and took a break from this kind of group. Perhaps things just aren't going the way you want them too, or you simply don't have the time to devote to making these kinds of adjustments. Thats fine and perfectly understandable, it happens to the best of us. Though a break away may be best for now. NOT meaning to say you could never return to try your luck again!

~Star,
(if I'm way off in this I apologize in advance and will simply remove my post and try to get a better understanding of this idea.
