    Looking for AM2+ MoBo

Still cleaning up from the storm and trying to put my life back together but on a positive note found part time work as a rigging grip on a new movie. Looks like the SATA controller on my M2N32 Pro is dead and creating all kinds of issues and really not in a place yet to start a new build. So any one with a board they'd like to pass on I'll pay good value.

    Thanks
    Bronco

    Re: Looking for AM2+ MoBo

Some of you know my recent travails. I placed these orders today and will fill in the few blanks (SSD, HDD's, DVD) in the next couple of weeks so I'll be back before Christmas. Already have the case and will strip my old build for everything else I need esp. the 1000 watt psu.

ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
    G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9Q-32GSR
    AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8350FRHKBOX
    Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - OEM

    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL
2nd set of ram was packaged with the board and if anyone has need pm me and I can pass it on.

    Re: Looking for AM2+ MoBo

Chickened out! The cost of the cpu for the Intel build was more than the mobo, cpu, and ram for the AMD build and I had wanted the octo-core AMD since I had first read they were in development. I was disappointed when I heard they were dropped and couldn't resist the Piledriver (what Bulldozer was suppose to be). Now, all I have to worry about is whether the Sabertooth will boot with this CPU.

32GB of ram? Talk about overdoing it. I thought 16 GB was overkill for my rig.\

But looks like a good rig and should run DayZ just great. Look forward to seeing you in-game, Bronco.

    Re: Looking for AM2+ MoBo

    @ Price,

RAM's fairly cheap now. I put in 32 GBs of RAM too, so rather have more than not enough when it comes down to crunch time.

    @ Lpbronco,

Yeah I hear ya. If I was willing to wait, I would have gone with the Piledriver 8320 and the Sabertooth as well.

You should have no problems booting up your new rig with the Sabertooth 990FX + FX-8350. It's on the board's supported CPU list.

    Re: Looking for AM2+ MoBo

Thanks for the heads up. Read somewhere that the Rev 2 board solved a lot of problems with hardware selections. Also, I've been asked why I would give away $40 worth of memory and my answer is that its better than sitting in the bottom of a drawer for the next ten years.

    Re: Looking for AM2+ MoBo

I need to print a retraction on the general cost of an Intel system vs an AMD. If I had looked at comparable CPU's then the overall cost of the Intel build with an I7-3770k would have only raised the price about $130 but I was comparing high end Intel which was not a fair test. Overall the Vishera does well in heavily multi-threaded tests but falls back considerably on lightly or single threaded bench marks so although it will be an acceptable gamer it cannot compare to any Ivy Bridge chip or even most Sandy Bridge examples. Oh well, next time.

    Re: Looking for AM2+ MoBo

Now I know I'm getting old.

Got the cpu, ram, and cooler mounted on the mobo and installed in the case today. I had already taken the time to place my floppy, optical and HDD's in the case a couple of days age. I went to cable the drives to the board and PSU and there ISN'T a floppy connection on the mobo. Guess it's time to pick up a flash drive or two.

Ran into one new problem, my EPS 12v cable (8 pin to 8 pin psu to mobo) shows some corrosion from the saltwater bath it recently received and unable to locate a 24" cable to replace it. Ordered 2 12" extensions from Frye's so doesn't look like I'll get it online this weekend after all.

    Re: Looking for AM2+ MoBo

For those that are following the snails pace of this build execution. I decided to add SATAIII storage and of course got caught up in trying to find a sweet spot for cost to performance as I usually run two drives in RAID 0 for this purpose. The final decision came down to WD 1tb 64mb cache vs Seagate 2tb 64mb cache drives (cost being equal). The number of drive failures recorded for the 2tb drives put me off but I was left with the question of whether these failures were due to drive or MoBo (outdated BIOS?). I also looked at the WD Raptor 300gb which are greatly reduced on the Holiday lists at Newegg.

The 1tb WD's won the day and should be here about the same time as the power cable I ordered. Anyone interested these drives are under $95 at Amazon.

Next on the list is a new GPU but it'll probably have to wait until after Christmas so taking suggestions for BBftB (Best Bang for the Buck).
