Re: GPS recommendations?
Hey. I just bought a Nuvi 660 for myself with bonus money and NewEgg has the Nuvi 250W for a really good price.

Re: GPS recommendations?
The 660 is being replaced by the 680.. is the 680 worth the extra $300.. NOT that I can tell. The 680 is a little faster but essentially the exact same as the $799 680. Both are not nearly as well featured as my M5 was - the M5 had EVERYTHING.. the 6-series.. not-so-much.
It still is highly accurate and up to date you can (pay for) get more detailed maps by SD card that would probably bring it up to pace with the M5 - probably why they don't sell the M5 package anymore.
Overall the 660 is HOT.. a great screen and maps and available at a great price but a disappointment compared to the iQue M5.

Re: GPS recommendations?
I thought I'd bump this as I am looking for GPS. Any help relating to an automobile GPS unit would be appreciated!

Re: GPS recommendations?
mmm, not hell at all really. there are many things in airplanes that help a pilot and generally no matter what airplane you fly each one has the same basic principles but its like going from an Alto instrument to a baritone. you just have to get used to a few different "feelings" on the airplane.
as far as angles go, you would just hold a nose up pitch at Vref+5+Half Calculated winds+Full wind gusts (Approach Speed) to maintain a 500-1000FPM descent to stay on the Glideslope for the particular runway as described in the chart. Depth can be kind of a hassle especially when your flight deck is 30-40 feet above the ground. but nobody's perfect and there is GPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System) to help you tell exactly how high above the ground your main wheels are
747-400

and its GPWS

500, 100, 50, 40, 30, 20 ,10. it also makes sounds like "Woop Woop Pull up" "Terrain, Terrain" "Minimums"
Flyings a lot easier then many make it out to be.......if you studied it like you would take a math class for a year, you would be fairly knowledgeable about aviation

Re: GPS recommendations?
It has been a while since I used GPS's. It was all for navigation in the forest, lakes and marking values for mapping purposes.
We used the cheapy ones for general getting around and taking notes on basic locations. Thing is you don't want to really on them soley. You need to be good with a map, aerial photo and compass, the gps only enhances things. We had really expensive Garemins for accurate stuff but they were troublesome in heavy tree cover sometimes.
For getting around in an urban environment I would make sure that you can upload good base maps, that it's not picky with signals, that you can change settings easily like NAD 83 etc. I don't have any recommendations as I have been out of it so long. Personally a good map is never going to be a bad choice to have even with a gps.

Re: GPS recommendations?
Bump..
I'm taking a trip to Europe and want a cheap GPS to make sure I don't get lost for too long. Probably a false sense of security. I've been looking at all the new ones; they play MP3s, movies bluetooth, blah blah. I just want a simple GPS that tell me where I am and where to go. With a GUI. And it fits in my pocket. I don't want to spend a lot because I don't need one in the states, just for the 2 weeks I'm there. Have any ideas guys?

Re: GPS recommendations?
I was going to suggest a Garmin Etrex Vista, but it's discontinued, and I haven't shopped for a GPS since I got that. It's a handheld trail unit and one could buy CD's of map data to download into it. I have mine loaded with a good chunk of the San Francisco area.
