Re: 64-Bit windows?
Actually, I forgot to mention Itunes and having a problem with it.
@Rincewind, what driver patch fix are you talking about? I have having the issue where you can't burn CDs with Itunes.

Re: 64-Bit windows?
I was also considering this same question about 64 bit XP and had started searching and looking for some info about it. What I found out was most people that have 64 bit claim they have less troubles from Vista using 64 bit rather than the 32 bit and that there are more drivers that work better with 64 bit, not so many for 64 bit XP though. 64 bit XP really did not go over real big with the average computer user but 64 bit appears to be doing pretty good so far for Vista. Also from doing some reading around this may be the last operating system a person may have the choice of 32 bit or 64 bit, Microsoft's next will most likely be 64 bit only(rumors only). 64 bit can also recognize more RAM which means Vista will usually perform better.
I am planning on a new computer build and was going to buy Vista 64 bit to run. I also have 4Gb or maybe even more if it fits into the price. I have not personally used any 64 bit O/S cause the computer I have now does not support it.

Re: 64-Bit windows?
That I bet is a conflict with some other program you have installed on your computer. I had Daemon Tools and DVDFab on my computer and could not burn CD's with Itunes until I uninstalled one oor the other of those 2 programs. You may need to also just rename a file a program is using temporarily, I could have done that with DVDFab but just uninstalled it anyway.

Re: 64-Bit windows?
It is actually a well known issue with Itunes and Vista 64. They say in their help section they do not support 64 yet but are working on it. Crazy thing is the Mac OS is native 64, microsoft is just behind on the times.
As far as XP64 not really going over well, for one nobody but a few hard core really needed it, and since DDR1 memory is so freakin expensive, most people didn't go over that 2-3, and most programs like games didn't need that much anyway. With Vista I go over 3 gigs almost everyday, usually when I am in game and jump out to do other things or run other programs in the back ground. I have a duel monitor set-up with the Vista sidebar on the side LCD so I can watch my CPU and Memory usage all the time to know what is going on.
Now that people are actually buying more than 3 gigs and programs like Crysis can use it, manufacter folks are taking notice and supporting Vista 64 a lot more than XP64 ever was. I hope they do away with the 2 versions as the rumor is saying.
By the time in 2009 when the next windows is released, pretty much all computers that will be able to handle it will have 64 capable CPUs, which right now isn't completely the case yet. Still a few old Intel p4's around.

Thanks Rince, but I installed this and it still didn't work. Here's the thread over on the MS TechNet support forums:

Re: 64-Bit windows?
XP64 here. Note that the big advantage isn't the wider address and data, but more registers. Registers are like level -1 cache, and the more you have, the less the CPU has to swap out intermediate results it's calculating to the level 0 cache.
And it doesn't matter if the program is 32-bit, because the kernel, device drivers, and GUI code will all be 64-bit and will be taking advantage of those extra registers, and most programs spend much of their time in that code. (Hopefully DirectX is 64-bit, but the video drivers will be.)Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Re: 64-Bit windows?
Hmm, this is a good thread. I've actually have some questions in regards to Vista 64-bit and older games:
1) Anyone know if they can play Star Trek: Armada and Star Trek: Armada 2 on Vista 64-bit?
2) Same question for Homeworld 2, Freespace / Freespace 2, Starcraft 1 and expansion pack.Acreo Aeneas

Re: 64-Bit windows?
I'd expect most games to play fine. Tribes 2 works fine on my XP64 setup, as does ETQW. I'd expect any game that will run under WINE on Linux would run on XP64 under WoW (Windows on Windows), the Windows equivalent of WINE.

Re: 64-Bit windows?
Some of the early Star Wars titles are in the 'disable 1 GB or RAM' if you are using over three GB..

Age of Conan: Commandant of the Order of the Silver Dragons
Tharashk (HoX), Thraesian (PoM), Thaumiel (Guardian), Sorus (Assassin)
XBox360 GamerTag: P8riotOne (but it might also be my son playing - he can game with TG tho!)

Re: 64-Bit windows?
Thanks, Scratch. That gives me a rough idea that my older games will still be playable to an extent. Hmm, I'm not worried about the "over 3 GB of RAM" issue. I'll probably end up getting my next system set up by the time Vista SP1 releases. Then I don't have to worry about having 4-8 GBs of RAM sitting inside.

Re: 64-Bit windows?
It's the GEARSEC drivers for x64 (choose the x64 tab and download the version for your chipset--probably the first option):

Re: 64-Bit windows?
I CAN'T FREAKING BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Itunes is pretty much the only problem program I have had since getting Vista64, and I have been reading TONS of forums and posting for help, and even sent Apple an email asking for an update on the progress of a 64 version. Then yesterday a guy in a forum posted how he had had the problem still someone told him about the GearSec CD/DVD Burning driver, and it fixed his. So I installed it yesterday and it worked. Was so relieved.
Now what do they do? Fix it themselves. Only a year + later.
Oh well, least it finally works.
