Re: Unofficial PSU Ranking List (What's the best PSU to buy?)

Here is a new review just posted by Anandtech.
It looks at 500 and 550 watt power supplies, and is a top notch review.
They recently did a like 400 watt review, so lets hope they will be doing a 600+ watt review soon, which is what most of us are interested in.

Re: Unofficial PSU Ranking List (What's the best PSU to buy?)

Just reposting this so we can keep track of it without digging later

Lot of you guys know I recommend a Corsair HX620 in most of the builds I help with, as it gets really good reviews and I am very happy with mine. Looks like Corsair has taken it even further with a new 750 and 850 model that is extremely efficient. Most PSUs are 85% or less, and crappy ones can be under 70% or lower, which means a lot of the power they use turns into waste heat, and means when you start gaming, when you need the power the most, your PSU available power actually goes down. The more efficient it is the higher the stable power it can put out at hotter temps and under stress.

And on top of that it is modular, which I love and once you build with one you will see why. Together with a good case you have a clean install for less mess and killer air flow.

See the sticky here for more info:
Unofficial PSU Ranking List (What's the best PSU to buy?)

I'm going to post this new article link in that thread too I think so we don't loose it when helping people pick one.

And here is a link to the review for the 850watt.

Re: Unofficial PSU Ranking List (What's the best PSU to buy?)

I just picked up the Corsair HX750. It is suuuweeet...I love the modular cords and the inside of my case is as clean looking as it's ever been. Now I need to rid myself of the two IDE peripherals i have still installed. (DVD/CD, legacy IDE HD).

I needed a new psu because I recently upgraded from a 8800GT to a GTX280 and this card is a beast. It requires both a 6 pin and an 8 pin PCIE power connector. My 5 y/o Antec 550W trupower PSU just didn't have enough juice. I had been having random shutdowns while gaming and knew it had to be the PSU.

One thing I didn't expect--My boot up time has been cut in half...Can anyone offer a theory as to why the PSU would affect start up times. I mean I know the HD draws a certain amount of current and all but could a variance from that have affected boot up times ??

Don't worry, I've been happy for 3 years with my tier 5 Rosewill $50 PSU. Of course I don't overclock/strain the PSU either so I may not be hitting the conditions the higher tiers stand up to better.

Re: Unofficial PSU Ranking List (What's the best PSU to buy?)

You could try it with the 550w, but that would be the absolute scary minimum considering the crossfire. I would say it is good for a single card setup, but I would look for something in the 600+ range for dual 4850.

But remember the new 50** series is out next month and even what will probable be named the 5850 should be a crossfire setup of 4850s, and use less power and put off less heat. There is supposed to be a major news conference very soon, and we should start seeing real benchmarks very soon.

cutting edge is like buying a new car... its nice and pretty but once you drive it off the lot.... I usually pick up the crumbs of last years high end for great savings. I guess if I cant play it on crossfired 4850's maybe I dont need to be playing it or i'll crossfire some 4890's when they come down. BTW i used this to get an answer from Antec: http://www.antec.outervision.com/
