hey bamboo help on mobo cpu and ram

ok after watching some ebay auctions get the price run up and i dont really want a foxconn or jetway motherboard, i decided to listen to yall and go ahead and upgrade to a new mobo cpu and ram.

what i would like to do now is get a decent motherboard, cpu, and ram and reuse my current case psu vidiocard and hdd (still hoping those items are ok) and upgrade those in a few months.

might need a psu mine is only 420watts

is sli really worth it over just buying 1 vidio card with the funds you'd spend on 2 ?
i was just looking at this with its FSB

    and this cpu
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103242
    it would need a fan
or this one with a heatsink and fan

    and this ram

I don't think the SLI is worth it. I would consider it if they would get their acts together and #1 get drivers that consistently work without problems, and have them out before a game hits the market (sli was useless until just recently for crysis, and seems to happen with every good new game) and #2 when they open up and allow you to run 2 cards no matter the brand, like 2 ATI boards on an Nvidia motherboard, and vice versa. Not to mention that as of today ATI's new X2 boards are out, and they are pretty much 2 ATI graf. cards on one board, so you have Crossfire in one PCI-E slot. No need for the 2 full speed slots, which if you want to consider with what you are looking at will be a LOT more expensive. Wouldn't consider a board that has 1 full speed and one half speed if you are thinking SLI, even if they are cheaper.

I think for now the PSU will do, as long as u are sure that isn't what is wrong with the whole thing. Have you tried taking it to bestbuy or somewhere and having them run a quick check. Who knows, maybe it is just one of the rails that is fried, and the like 3V rail is what is running your case fans. Might be worth a quick trip to the store just in case.
They may try to charge you, but just ask them to run a quick test for you cause if it is bad you are going to go buy one from them right there. Just try to hit them when there isn't like 12 other angry people in line. Worked for me when I thought my PSU was causing Blue Screens.

As far as the AMD CPU, I am not nearly as good with those as with the current stuff from Intel. I was really into them about a year ago, until Intel all of a sudden got their act together. We just talked about it in this thread:

    Scrachmonkey agreed as well.

If you want to go AMD that is a good CPU, but a bit bothered that they only have OEM in that, and the next chip up is $139 for the next model. You would only get the 30 day warranty if I am correct going OEM with Newegg. Plus, you would have to buy a good CPU cooler, which would bring the price to at least the cost of the 5600, if not more after shipping and all.
I would spend the money on the 5600 since it is retail, and a 3 year warranty, and it has 2x the L2 Cache. I looked around at all the other shops I normally check, and I couldn't find the 5400 in retail, which makes me guess they have quit making it.
The board looks to be good though, since you have an SATA HD to use. Notice that it only has the ability to run to of the old ATA drives like your DVD drive is. Just pointing out if you wanted to upgrade something later.
I really like ASUS, as do most of the people I know in other forums.
Memory might pick something extra, and here is why. I went with 1066 speed as well, since I thought OH Boy, it is faster! but turns out not really. It can only run as fast as your FSB can work it. AMD does do better then Intel with that, so would be good if you go AMD, but I would go with this instead

It is the same price after rebate (Kingston has rebate too) but that Crucial is top of the line stuff. I have seen lots of review sites give it 8s and 9s and overclock the crap out of it and it stay stable. Look at its reviews compared to the Kingstons and you will see what I mean. Way better stuff, but the rebate ends on 1-31-08 (Kingston ends the next day.)

Now on the other hand, if you want to consider for a moment going the intel route, I think you would be really happy as well.
Check out this CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Allendale 2.2GHz
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115031

This is what one of the customers said on newegg:
This is a very good processor I had both Amd 5600+ and this e4500 however it made a huge impact when i tried using this chip on my 2nd built computer I thought that my amd 5600 will be more faster than this I was amaze of its high overclockeable potential got mine @ 3.2 GHZ with 1.35V running stable at the speed feeding all of the game that i want and it wouldn't even hiccup invest your money into this cpu because it is very well worth it but make sure you get a motherboard that you can overclock because this baby has a high oc potential running 3.2 full load 30 celcius with stock HSF..
It runs with only 0.85V – 1.5V, compared to the AMD 1.30 V/1.35 V, meaning cooler and more energy efficient.
Check out people's reviews: 89% of 150 people gave it 5 eggs
It is EASY to overclock to give a huge boost to an already really good chip (and I mean safe overclock with absolutely no fear of anything going wrong. Just bumping the FSB up a little bit in the BIOS would have you to 2.8 or 3.0, and your CPU would be running the same not even noticing, that is how good the new intels are.) That CPU would be a lot faster than the AMD even at stock though.
You could get a similar Asus MB for around $100 as well but with 775 socket. That would be a smoking system, and as you said if you decide to upgrade to a better Graf. card and power supply later in the year, like if everyone gets that Tax refund they are talking about , you would be set for a couple of years.
And if you go with the Intel, it would be better to get this memory instead:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146565
Pretty much the same as above but 800 speed, which is all your FSB would be able to keep up with, and IT IS ONLY $49!!!!!!!!!!! Hell, I would try and figure out a way for a friend to order you some too so you could be running with the 3.2 gigs your OS will allow. That is just a crazy price for such good memory compared to a year ago.

Either way, your total would end up under $300 with shipping, and a $25 rebate to send in.

Let me know what you think.

I suggest the boxed 5600+ instead of the OEM 5400 AMD.

    Just a quick question.
Any reason you decided to go with the AMD. Just curious?
Wondering if it is brand loyalty or something else.

Re: hey bamboo help on mobo cpu and ram

    kinda brand loyalty
i've just been using them for about 10 years now
this is the first time i've had a comp conk out and i'm sure it would still have been running for a good while longer if it wasn't for the freak static electricity day.

    just what i'm comfortable with
some of these work computers i've had are intel and have had some problems
but i do think that has more to do with being refurbished dell's than the type of proccesor

    Cool man. Good to hear.
By the way, you have me so parinoid about touching my computer now and worrying about shocks.
My cats always walk up to me to get petted while I am at the computer or jump in my lap, and when I touch them I get a shock.
I keep thinking about what will happen if I touch my rig now. Thanks a lot
Sorry you don't get to spend your cash on fishing gear.
I was really into fishing till I moved to the washington DC area. My best bud back home started his own wood crafting business, and mainly made fishing lures. He was just starting to get well known and even the Raleigh news and Observer newspaper did an article on him.
Bad news is though he passed away Christmas day last month from complication from diabetes. I am posting this just to pass on the memory of him and his work. He sent me a bunch of pics cause I was about to put up a web site for him, but I decided now to leave them posted on flickr.com photo for all to see. There are 2 pages worth.

Just noticed some of them are duplicates, will fix that tomorrow.
Anyway, good luck with your fishing this spring Dead_Meat !
