I know a lot of people did this when Office 2007 came out, and they were very happy to sit for a few hours and get it for free. Visual Basic gave my mother's boyfriend the worst headache ever. Installed it...wasnt there. Not even in program files, but was taking up HDD space. After a week talking to India he finally seemed to resolve it..

To add to this.... microsoft.com/expert zone -- if you are employed somewhere that sells computer hardware or software, you can do trainings there and get free stuff, games, software, hardware, etc.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to replace MSDNAA or supplement it. Google MSDNAA and your school and you might already be eligible for free MS software. Got my copy of Vista for free and a few other tools that have come in handy for school.

Most of those programs are already available through MSDNAA (at least here at DePaul).
