Re: Thoughts on build?

You read me right. A fan that is screwed into the wood in the same cubby as the computer, and sucking all the hot air out and blowing it into the other cubby. Lots of high end entertainment setup have them.
Something like this:

They have it here where you can plug it into a normal outlet, and that was just the 1st UK place I looked

Re: Thoughts on build?

Actually, I read a lot a couple of weeks ago about 1066 ram (I am running that now) and found out your CPU can't actually use any where near that, unless you do crazy stuff in your BIOS like cut way back on your Multiplier and ramp your FSB up sky high, which then nagates buying a good processor.
If I had known the stuff I read in some articles, I would have saved my $200 and went with top of the line 800 instead. Was actually kind I pissed I didn't really do as much research on RAM before buying and just bought the best stuff there was.
Should pretty much only get 1066 if you are buying a $1000+ extreme quad and going to overclock the crap out of it with H2O.

Re: Thoughts on build?

Unless you are rich, don't even think about it.
I looked on newegg last week and 2 gig was still over $400.

Will try and find the memory articles.

Re: Thoughts on build?

Yh, I've heard a lot of problems with people using 1066 MHz and having to bring it back down to 800 for some reason or another (I got the jist, but had no idea what the technical stuff was about ).

Also, I was thinking of DDR3, but it's way too expensive.

And, to the fan..., I'm very seriously considering it...

Re: Thoughts on build?

A lot of motherboards won't support 1066, but that is another reason why I bought the ASUS I did, as they have a huge logo on their box pointing out that the MB does.
I did have a problem with one of my 2 gig sets, and actually had to underclock it for windows not to blue screen until I got it RMAed. Lot of people end up having to underclock, and almost all have to manually go into their bios and crank up the voltage to make it work.

This does look promising, and according to some of those on the forum, it says that the 9800GX2 will be the beast that it seems the GTX might not be...

Also @Bamboo, So what exactly am I looking for? An intake fan that can be directly put into a mains power? Also, what sort of power do I need, and what kind of size? Is the one you linkified good enough? Because I don't need to cool a whole system, just suck out the hot air, and small fan should be able to do this enough, right?

Re: Thoughts on build?

I would think a small fan would do fine. And for ease of use, I would look for a fan that you could plug directly into a normal power outlet, not a fan you would need to plug into a computer power supply.
You might want to visit just a local computer shop, or maybe something like a store we have here called Radio Shack. They just sell electronic parts and things.

Re: Thoughts on build?

I may just use that linked one, because on the "More info" link at the bottom of the page it says how it can be fitted into a "Hi-Fi cabinet" as it is put (I think I'm right in assuming you will have seen it Bamboo, because of that second picture you posted at the top of this page, right?) and this is obviously similar. It gives measurements too, and that always speeds the process along. Seems simple enough when looking at what I have to do there...

Also, any dates on releases for the 9800 GTX or any other graphics cards?

Re: Thoughts on build?

That is how I found the place.
I did a google image search for like cabinet fan, saw that picture, and found the catalog.

Look in the CeBit thread I did for info on the cards. Lots of news on them there, but GTX by the end of the month, and the 9800 X2 will be March 15th, but plan on winning the lottery to afford one.

Re: Thoughts on build?

Cabinet fan, huh...cool, I'll look around for some more.

Woah.

Quote:
Geforce 9800 GX2 will launch in the week of the 18th of March and in the U.S. it will cost $599, while in Europe we would averagel €549+VAT.
€549+VAT ~ £491.

2 8800 GTX's (inclusing VAT as well) would end up being less than that.

Hopefully prices would have come down, But I'll also keep one eye on the prices of GTX's as they fall, and the progress of the 4000 series from ATI...

Maybe 2 SLI GTX's? Maybe one GTX and a GTS in SLI?

Whatever happens though, it doesn't seem like the 9800 series is gonna be for me...

Re: Thoughts on build?

By the time you are thinking of building this summer, the 9800GTX will be down to like $525 or so, espically if AMD gives them some good competition with the 4000 series.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I am almost positive you can't do a GTX and GTS in SLI.
That is only possible with AMD/ATI's Crossfire (mixing 2 different boards)

For any graphics card configuration of more than one (and especially for SLi) you need to have the same graphics card.
