Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
After I build a new rig, my current rig may end up an extreme cooling mod...
Thanks for the aquarium idea.

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
The more I think of it, the more I link it could work, depending on the heat output.
One thing would be to cool off a heat sink while the computer is off or idle. Also you wouldn't want to put the power supply in it. No use cooling that off. You could also use a heat exchanger so that when you exhaust you would dump as little of the cool air as possible to the outside world. I really don't think the compressor would run continuously if designed correctly. Make it deep freeze and exhaust out the top with a good heat exchanger and it might work. Condensation also shouldn't be much of a problem. Almost all the moister in a freezer comes from the food you put in it. No food -> very little moister.

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
I don't know if there are any good computer stores near you, but if there is a Best Buy or a Micro Center nearby, you can usually see if they carry any nitro-cooling kits. The kits come with all the tubing you'll need and usually good instructions on how to put it together and get the nitrogen you need to power it.
![]() Last I saw one was at Micro Center about a year back and it was going for about $200 (included the CPU heatsink). They're probably like $150 or so now.

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
Back up a second, how do you connect your mouse etc. and how do you connect to a mains if its duct=taped sealed?

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
All you need now is a way to cool the oil and that's it. Maybe put the heat exchanger in the mini fridge?
![]() That aquarium mod is really cool. When I build my next computer I think I'm going for it. |

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
Yh, after looking at that Oil Aquarium thing, I'm tempted to do some more research on it and see if I can maybe build one myself...

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
Check here; it's a pic of the huge passive radiator they added. It dropped their oil temp from 88C to 45C with no fans at all. It's completely silent except for the oil pump itself. They eventually took it off because it was too big and ugly. I'd say just throw it behind your 30" LCD and call it good

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
Yh, those details are on the same page near the bottom. They did updates 2 weeks and 6 months later. It's interesting to see, and they said that they were going to build another project of the same type around Spring of this year, so let's see if that happens.

Re: The Self contained Fridge Computer
Took some hunting to dig up this thread, but just saw an interesting how to that I think the people interested in this topic would like to see.
http://inventgeek.com/Projects/Keger.../overview.aspx For less than $200, he uses a fridge to help cool the computer, but keeps the case outside. Makes really good sense, and has me interested in trying. ![]()
