    Exactly!
Though even if I was running a 7 series, unless I was building tomorrow and absolutly had to have a card, I would still wait for this summer.

Think about how big a jump the g92 core was from the old (it powers the 8800GT, GTS 512 mb, and the 9800GTX/ GX2.

Then think about if they can do a jump like that again with the G200 core this summer (it is again a die shrink, which means cheaper for them to produce, and cooler and less power needs for us.) The fact that we are talking about only 3 months from now, I would keep the 7 series, and 6 series for that matter.

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

I would wait as well, but I'm going to be building mine from scratch late June (21st/22nd I'm gonna order...that day can't come round soon enough) and I'm not upgrading, I'm building everything from scratch, so I don't have something that can get me by in the meantime while I wait for that generation of cards to be released. Anyway, they'll be a whole new core type, which will probably mean a huge step up in price as well.

I'm also hoping the 9800 GTX and the 3870 X2 can improve in terms of drivers and price by late June, also watching the 4000 series in May...

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

Couple of new articles out this morning on the subject:

[Review] Say no to GeForce 9800GTX!

G80 VS G92: Med to high end GeForce GFX cards round-up!

That last article above is what I have been looking for for a while. I have an 8800GTS 640mb and whated to know where it stood.

Turns out it is equal to a 9600GT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crap, so a card I paid $400 for in OCT. is now the same as a card that costs $150. I know tech changes, but wow that sucks. They better have some good stuff in store for us this summer.

    Dito!!!

However the one nice thing for us is that we don't have the potential headaches that others are having right now with teh 9600 cards. Apperantly allot of issues with them. After looking at all those graphs there is really no solid reason to upgrade a 8800 GTS 640mb right now. It would be better to wait until the summer and get a new ATi or nVidia card or a good deal on a X2 or 9GTX.

Here is a review of the ASUS 9800GTX
    Asus EN9800 GTX Review

Crazy thing is, they said in the blurb about the article that with it overclocked, it can almost keep up with the $550 9800 X2, and this one only costs about $300.

Yh, it apparently has enormous overclocking potential, which begs the question, why didn't nVidia decide to use this potential and just make the standard card better?

I have heard there is rumor there is an 9800 Ultra in the future, or they left the headroom for the partners like EVGA and ASUS to play with.

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

Not really worth making a new thread about yet, but here is some news about the upcoming 9900 series
    http://en.expreview.com/2008/04/08/g...-three-months/

Would be cool if the 9900GTX is a powerful as the 9800 GX2, but not cool if the price is as they think about the same as well.

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

Wow It doesn't make much sense at first to release the 98xx and then kill it within a few months by bringing out the 99xx cards.

Perhaps ATi scared them good with the X2?

Either way the next gen cards from either company should be a welcome option for us people holding out. I just cant justify upgrading from a G80 to a G92 card right now.

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

I'm pretty sure the reason why the 9800 cards aren't lasting long is because there isn't any new tech in them, and people were not impressed with the same 8800 cards renamed and with the threat of the 4000 series from ATI coming they may want to try and put up a fight.

I'm glad I got my 8800GT for $165 when I did in stead of a 9 series card

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

News out today is that Nvidia is about to kill off the 8800GTS 512mb since there is so little difference between it and the stock 9800GTX

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

Well, actually, there is a big difference which nVidia don't like...the price. Most people are going to pay for the cheaper 8800GTS because it costs less, and has roughly the same performance.

    Re: 9800GTX early tests

nVidia really seems to be tripping over themselves with video card releases and naming. They bring out the 8800GTS and GTX then change the GTS but call it the same thing. Bring out the GT which you would think is lower down then a GTS but beats the old GTS and competes with the GTX almost. Then they bring out the 9xxx cards which IMO because there the same chip should have simply been 8900 cards to keep it simple. If they bring out the next Gen cards and call them 99xx yet there a whole new architecture it will confirm that they indeed have monkeys running the marketing department.
