Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
This article just posted, and while it is supposed to be about repairs, it helps show how easy it is to replace your RAM, MotherBoard, and an add in card.
And of course if you can replace something, you could just as easily build from scratch.
3 Simplest DIY Computer Repairs Anyone Can Do
Pretty basic stuff you only need to read if you haven't done it before or as a quick review guide.

Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
This is a new and really good guide, but is very basic. If you already know the basics about memory, what an SATA cable looks like compared to IED, etc, then you can skip this one. But is you are ready to finally start building your own rig, it is a good way to start.

Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
Maximum PC just posted this article, and while I would spend a little more to buy a few higher end stuff (to get ready for games like Bad Company 2 and Medal of Honor due out this year), it has some really good instructions for putting it all together. Really is easy to build your own, and look how this cheap PC spank the store bought HP that costs the same from a store.

Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
Tom's Hardware has a really good article all about picking the right motherboard:
Best Of Tom’s Hardware: Beginner’s Guide To Motherboard Selection
Really good and easy to read.
Right now though I would not buy a motherboard unless it had Sata6 on it. Even if you don't get around to getting a SSD drive for a year or 2, you are going to want that option. USB 3.0 is also something I would look for, but it is really cheap to add that in with a PCI card later for less than $30.

Really cool guides in here and very good for a beginner. Hopefully my friends will read these when i tell them rather than whining to me that there PCs don't turn on.

Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
Gizmodo just posted a really good article about making smart choices to upgrade your PC:
The Best, Cheapest Ways to Upgrade Your PC
Most of them are very good suggestions and are really level headed. It is worth a read if you are new to upgrading or if you are just on the fence right now about upgrading a certain part of your current rig.

Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
Some of that stuff is hardly budget. 60 bucks for a headset is way out of low end budget considerations.
300 bucks for a 23inch LCD? good lord!
You can find so many better newegg deals than this article is showing. Seems like a reason for this writer to boast his favorite parts.

Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
I think it is intended more for the people who normally spend a large amount to begin with, as they mention throwing $1000 on your computer for an upgrade is too much and showing large return for price compared to top end hardward. I was pleased with the Seagate 1TB hard drive and Athlon II quad core processor (within 5 bucks of the cheapest AMD quad core at the time) as those were my choices on my last upgrade for price to performance and I usually purchase an item within 20% of the lowest priced item that offers my requirements to allow for quality difference.
Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

Re: Ultimate PC Building Guide
To be fair, that article has more to do with wanting higher-end equipment yet offering alternatives with additional functionality--it's not really aimed at the market of people offering bits of string. His prices are a little high since he's posting the manufacturer's store prices but then, who doesn't shop around anyway?
