Re: NVIDIA Responsible for Nearly 30% of Vista Crashes in 2007

While this chart is quite interesting and shows some useful information, I'd say that it's slanted and somewhat meaningless. What we really need is to have a chart right next to it that tallies crashes in XP. That way we could compare what's going on between the two OS's with respect to the source of crashes. I'd imagine that you would see the amount of crashes caused by nVidia to shrink.

Re: NVIDIA Responsible for Nearly 30% of Vista Crashes in 2007
The number I wrote were just the ones I thought I remembered from the article (having read it a few days before, since Gizmodo was actually slow picking up on the article)
My numbers were off, but not by much. You are right, I would really like to see an XP chart. Still, when comparing, Nvidia does not have a full 3 times the market share as ATI, last time I checked. I would like to know how the crashes were split up though. Was it all crashes from Nvidia, vs the grf. cards from ATI seperate from AMD chipset crashes? So like they say "The data clearly indicates that NVIDIA had a driver problem, but it's impossible to quantify the scope of that problem given the numbers above. NVIDIA holds a greater percentage of the market than ATI, which means that there will inevitably be a higher percentage of NVIDIA driver crashes than ATI driver crashes; however, the degree to which such market share considerations have affected the results above is hard to determine in the absence of more data. There's also the matter of data collection; Microsoft's charts do not clarify if multiple crashes from a single system each counted as separate events. In theory, NVIDIA's proportion of total driver crashes could be inflated by a relatively small handful of systems with severe driver issues. " But bottom line is they had a lot of problems, and really soured people towards Vista when it really needed an image boost.

they also never say how many of those were beta drivers or drivers designed for a particular games. crysis, time shift, and another game all wanted to install different drivers which screwed with games that worked fine b4{started crashing, hanging, studering}. hell b4 crysis i had never had a bsod with vista and have had it since day 1{well couple dayz b4 shhh}.

This was actually old data from when Vista just came out, not recent since Crysis (crapsist) came out.

Actually, Netvibes is my homepage with about 2 dozen RSS feeds from tech sites like HotHardware, Andantech, etc.
This site is one of 6 TG bookmarks I have on my firefox toolbar. I run Smart Bookmarks Bar extension so I can fit like 3 times as many icons on the toolbar. ![]()

Re: NVIDIA Responsible for Nearly 30% of Vista Crashes in 2007
While nvidia equips a good percentage of mobo and graphics chipsets with their hardware and thus should have a greater percentage of crashes, they still are at fault. My old A8N-SLI Deluxe had lots of problems with nvidia drivers on XP. Their graphics drivers used to be on the forefront with one driver for all cards, but for a while their software development totally dropped the ball. The firewall on nforce4 chipsets was a total joke.
The graphics drivers are finally stable again, a full year after the release of Vista. There was one year before the release for them to beta-test with the new driver model and I think they did zero. Creative is even worse. They made it on my don't buy list along with Maxtor. I avoid nvidia too, but still have a 8800GTS. It's actually been working quite well. My new Intel P35-based mobo is much more stable than the ASUS and does sleep mode very reliably.

Re: NVIDIA Responsible for Nearly 30% of Vista Crashes in 2007
Just found another article from a 'reliable' source: nvidia-sata-driver-bricks-xp
A friend with nforce4 board also reported data corruption - I had no issues (knock on wood).
