Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

And a whole $100 less than the GTX260 (supposedly mid/high-end when compared the 4870 and GTX280).

Those prices are staggering, and unless you're planning to harness you're graphics card to take over the world, I should think the ATi would be more than sufficient for any gaming machine...of course, take this with a pinch of salt. As I said before, we know nothing for sure until the benchmarks are done and the cards are released.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

Good points. Screen resolution isn't going to be much of an issue for most once all the main stream cards can easily handle 1680x1050 with lots of eye candy. I just hope that ATi doesn't drop the ball here and have issues with AA or only some games work well etc.

We can always have hope, but I really don't see any indication that ATi won't continue to follow their history of failing in certain areas, such as those that you stated above.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

This is out this morning:

Quote:

Middle June is the launch date and Nvidia can play with the date moving it from 18th to 17th or similar but it looks that Nvidia will launch both GT200 in week 25 2008.

A few of our sources have confirmed that they are in preparation to launch these boards at that time. As Nvidia set quite high standards the boards are suppose to be available at launch, and Nvidia has to ship in volume at the launch date.

The biggest issue is the price as around $600 might be too steep but at the same time GT200 / D10U-30 the board that you now known as Geforce GTX 280 will definitely be faster than dual chip Geforce 9800 GX2 that sells for minimum of $500.

ATI’s Radeon 4870 and 4850 will both end up slower but they will also cost significantly less. From what we know, 4870 should cost $229 and it will be slower than any GT200 but it will be almost twice cheaper.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

Interesting.

The 4870 will end up slower than the GTX 260...? Didn't know that. However, if it's faster than the 3870X2 and the 9800 GTX I'll be happy with it. Just need to wait for those benchmarks and see how much of drop there is from the GT200 to the ATis.

Now I just really can't wait to see what these cards can do...

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

Really disapointed in Nvidia's prices. If the 4870 turns out to give me much better FPS then my 8800GTS, I will be going with it. I just can't believe Nvidia is going back to the $600 price point. That card better be mind blowing good. I'm talking 60+ FPS in Crysis on Very High good.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

Well it's apparently better than the 9800GX2 so maybe...

But I think you're right. Are nVidia trying to lose money? It's almost like they feel sorry for ATi and are letting them catch up. You can't expect to make huge sales if you're appealing to a market of rich and reckless people who play PC games.

$349 would probably mean a roughly £200 price point (I know that's not a correct conversion, but they like to add some money when converting it from USD prices, and they expect no-one to notice or something), which is hugely affordable for a new GPU that beats most of what is out there at the moment (hopefully), the only thing I don't think it will beat is the 9800 GX2, which will still cost much more.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

So I have 14 days left on my evga step-up program with my 8800gt and was wondering if it is worth the jump into the 9 series or stay within the 8?

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

I was really into the idea of upgrading through the EVGA program, till someone here mentioned you have to send your card out 1st, then wait for them to get it and ship the new card out. OUCH.
Like 2 weeks with no gaming rig would be ruff.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

yea, but it is summer so there is plenty of other things to do and I have a ps3 so while I may be missing out on some tactical goodness, I still have other options so its not too bad.

Anyway, for bang for my buck, is upgrading to the 9 series better or do a smallish upgrade within the 8 series?

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

Well a 9800GTX is not much better than a 8800GTX, yet you can get one of those for much cheaper, so I'd suggest going for that. If you have the $$$ to get a 9800 GX2 (also consider your cooling, power supply and mobo as well - if you would not be able to manage this card with the current version of any of these 3, I'd say update the rest of your computer before you go for the best GPU out at the moment) then I'd say go for it if you want to play Crysis on high with decent FPS, and you play most of your games at stupidly high resolutions...otherwise that card is a little overkill, and not really worth the price (and if you're coping with the 8800GT at the moment and are simply upgrading to take advantage of this good opportunity, then I don't think you need the 9800GX2.)

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

See, they are going to release the real next gen cards on June 16th or so, so you are kind of out by a day to really upgrade. Though you might be able to call their coustomer support and talk them into giving you a couple day extension.

If you are talking about the 9800GTX, that would be a small step up for you, and I would say it depends on how much they are charging and how much they will give you for your card. If you can stand going without the card and it is only like $100, might be a good option, but I personally would only be motivated to do it to upgrade to the new cards released mid-month.
I would actually be really interested to hear if customer service would hook you up. Post back if you do call them and let us know what they say.
Of course you would also end up paying about $200 or so to get one of the new new cards.

I also say skip the GX2, unless you are on a 24"+ monitor.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

Yh, I was going to suggest to wait for the new cards, but like Bamboo said, unluckily you will be just out of the time period where you can use the step-up program. And actually, I never thought of asking them for an extension, but why not, can't hurt to ask... (unless you're not willing to pay $200+ (at the very least))

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

I strongly suggest you buy an 8 series nvidia card first. Then wait a few months(or year, or years) for the prices of gx2 to blow over, then upgrade.

Re: Latest news about next gen graf. cards

Bamboo, in your opinion is this card worth it? Im willing to pay but only if its worth it. Also how long after the cards are released do the benchmarks usually come out? And sorry for kinda going off topic, but if this is being released around the 15th, what about the p45 boards?
