Re: 19" CRT or 22" LCD??

Have a 22 inch Westinghouse for almost 1.5 years and love it. Was looking at a 24 and 28 inch in best buy, but need more $$$.

Re: 19" CRT or 22" LCD??

Make sure the response time for the LCD is 5ms or less to reduce ghosting.

Re: 19" CRT or 22" LCD??

Real gamers use 15" CRTs and rollerball mice.

Re: 19" CRT or 22" LCD??

I went from a 19" CRT to a 19" LCD and returned the LCD within the week. The LCD had great reviews and it didn't ghost. The problem, colors and shadows!

I couldn't adjust the monitor to replicate true colors and the dark areas showed steped shading, i.e. not a smooth transition from black to grey but rather bands or different grey.

I went to the store and looked at several and they all looked nice in the store but when I got it home on my pc with familiar games and pictures it became apparent.

I returned it and did some more research. There are a few different types of panels, some that have great responce time but not the best for color reproduction (the most common and wide spread panel tech.) then there are two other types that offer better color but not great responce time.

I bought one of the non mainstream panel types a Viewsonic 20.1" vx20 series. I believe its an IPA panel (not at home so cant check on all of the details) however the new version of this monitor has switched to the more common panel type. The colors are great right out of the box and shadows look real. It has a responce time of.... 15ms!!! and I only see ghosting on a few ocasion in very dark areas, very rare for me. Anything under 12ms apparently is fine so don't buy a monitor of 2ms over one at 8ms soley on responce times. I would not trade my color and minimal ghosting for no ghosting and poor color.

Be warned that the native resolution looks best, lower res is tolerable in some games. It will strain your current system if you go to a 22" monitor or bigger. However your system is getting pretty old and you could always lower you settings until you get a new system. I would not recomend a 19" LCD in widescreen as it is really short.

Im very happy now and wouldn't go back. Do your research, buy from a store or retailer where you can get a full refund and enjoy, take a disk with pictures that you know well to the store to demo. Dell apparently makes some really good monitors but there pricey. Good luck

Re: 19" CRT or 22" LCD??

I ran a 21" CRT and a 15" LCD side by side for over a year, and was happy, until I broke down and got a 22" ACER LCD (actually the cheapest around at $199.)
God I love it!!!
Actually, 1st thing I noticed was all of a sudden my room was so much cooler. Turned out my CRT had been putting out tons of heat out, and the LCD was way cooler, not to mention helping out my power bill.
I would never go back to CRT now. My only regret it I wish I had a 24", especially one like the Dell with all the extra plug-ins.
I have noticed mine does't do will with pure blacks, and there is some light leakage around the edges, but I did by the cheapest model there was, and a better model would only have been an extra $50 or so.

Re: 19" CRT or 22" LCD??

Has anyone tried the 24" LG? I see it in Best Buy's sale paper and am wondering how it compares to Samsung's. Both have 5 msec response time in the specs.

Alas, the stores don't show these off with games or text scrolling to give an idea of how they really perform. They play slide shows of photos and gross text, which at best shows some degree of ghosting. And because all the displays are slaved to one source, one can't tell if the ghosting is an artifact of the cabling or a property of the display.

Re: 19" CRT or 22" LCD??

I got to say, the ones on display at just about every store look like crap, but especially the ones in all the best buys I have ever been in.
Mine looked horrible on display, but it looks great on my desk.
