Re: Rig for hosting a server.

There is lots of good info on biowares forums. for nwn a very low budget server can do great. But as your world grows you will notice lag if you dont build your world right. too many custom scripts etc can really screw things up. you want roughly a 2 ghz cpu or a +2000 amd cpu. anything more is overkill. you want max memory. I have found that windows is a more stable hosting OS for nwn.

I helped run bastions of war for a few years and I know from experience that nwn has ver low bandwith requirements. you can host a pvp with no lag on a cable connection for up to 20 players. above that the bandwith starts to be an issue if you are doing pvp. If you are doing pvm then you can host more players.

Which way? For servers, the critical direction is outbound traffic. You need to shovel updates to a lot of clients.

Residential connections are asymmetric: Lots of inbound bandwidth but very little outbound capacity. That's because they're intended for web surfing, where a few keystrokes going out lead to lots of data (like images and video) coming in. It's exactly the opposite of what you need to run a server.
