Re: Teach me about Linux

Should be very simple, I've had no problems whatsoever so far.

Re: Teach me about Linux

I just dropped Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop; the sound card recognised I know because there's a startup sound. If there was one in 7.10, that version didn't handle my sound.

Re: Teach me about Linux

Aye, that was also one of the other reasons I've put it on the laptop. I barely use this thing for anything critical, so don't feel bad about messing anything up on it. I spent all day Sunday cleaning up my XP install (at the end just ended up reformatting), then put Ubuntu on it. Few things I've gotta tweak so far, regarding the sound and stuff not muting when I mute it or adjusting the volume, but I found a guide for it the other day, so not too worried about it.

Re: Teach me about Linux

Run headless (without a GUI), Linux is extremely lightweight. I'm running it on an old P3 with 256 MB memory and a big IDE disk as a backup server to back up my other computers.

Re: Teach me about Linux

How much do you know about DNS? SMTP/POP3/IMAP?

I run a few sendmail/SpamAssassin/Dovecot boxes on Red Hat based systems (Fedora, CentOS) and it took me awhile to understand all the details.

For email, don't start with both inbound and outbound mail until you understand spam relay prevention. You don't want to get blacklisted before you start.

Re: Teach me about Linux

you already went WAY over my head..

i am just tired of paying $9/month to have a hosted server that all I really do is use it for email purposes..has a few pics of the kiddo, but that is all it really is..

thought if i could host the thing myself and do email, then I would save myself a little cash..

Re: Teach me about Linux

OK, so I installed Ubuntu on a year-old laptop and everything seems to be working peachy except for the integrated wireless. I see that I need a proprietary firmware upgrade but I just can't figure out how to install it: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Dr...devicefirmware

Re: Teach me about Linux

You got me there, my wireless card is problematic as well. Another two distros some may like are Mepis and PCLinuxOS. You can find them here:

Re: Teach me about Linux

You could always try any of the "Live" distribution releases. They essentially boot themselves from CD/DVD and leave your hard disks untouched, allowing you to try out and test the different distros. You can use a USB flash key to store your preferences. There are a lot of colleges and universities using diskless workstations that boot RedHat/CentOS/Ubuntu over the network. The student just inserts their USB flash key and their entire desktop configuration (look, feel, colors, etc) is available along with all their files.

Good Luck

There are HOWTOs on the net, but you really need to understand at least POP3 and SMTP just so you can debug things when they go wrong. But don't get discouraged by the acronyms. They're actually pretty simple protocols. You don't need to know about bits. They're simple text commands that mail programs use to exchange mail between machines.

DNS is more complicated but you should at least be aware of how it works from a high level. Bit-level knowledge isn't necessary.

The biggest issue for me would be which mail transfer agent (MTA) you choose. I've been using Sendmail, the oldest one, forever, so I'm biased. It's pretty complex because it had to deal with a lot of competing protocols back before the Web, when there was no fixed Internet and every connection was ad hoc. Postfix has become pretty popular and the big distributions offer it as a choice, but I know little about how to operate it.

Whatever you set up, an Internet server is not "fire and forget". You have to monitor updates and watch the log files to make sure someone doesn't discover a vulnerability and use it to spam the world.

Re: Teach me about Linux

I'm mainly a server guy, and try to avoid wireless, so I can't do much more than offer the same help you've already found.

The instructions at that link look straightforward. Where do they fail for you?
